Modifying one of the 12 volt outlets |

Is it possible to modify one of the 12 volt outlets. e.g. the one next to the AUX socket so that it/they don't switch off when the key is turned to off or removed. I would value this facility in order to be able to charge up a phone or PDA when I am not in the car. Zambezi Silver SE / Ebony Leather

I asked our LR dealer if this could be done on our RRS. They said a new feed from the battery would have to be installed and therefore expensive. They then started talking about fibre optic feeding the cigarette lighter - which is complete b****cks. I therefore got the impression that they weren't interested in doing anything. Matt

Provided you can get behind the Aux socket panel then it is quite easy to run a dedicated fused wire from the battery through the firewall via the grommet near the brake booster. I have done this for a feed for my Electric brakes and UHF, although from my 2nd battery

The best way to set up a permanent power supply in the rear of the D3 or the RRS is to first do as RichardK did and fit an auxiliary battery.
Placing any form of load on the cranking battery while the motor is not running, in the D3 or RRS, can result in some strange vehicle operations if the battery is not in a good state of charge when you start the vehicle.
This can also occur when you first start the vehicle and you have a low auxiliary battery and low cranking battery.
Unlike other vehicles, with the D3 and RRS, you are better off leaving the cranking battery alone and source all your accessories power from a second battery. This is why, again unlike most newer 4x4s, D3s and RRSs do NOT have permanent powered sockets at the rear or anywhere else in these vehicles.
With a second battery installed, Fit a fuse of up to 20 amps as close as possible to the auxiliary battery’s positive the run a length of 4mm2 twin cable to the rear.
Fit a new socket in the rear and only use this for all your accessories power requirements.
Now as to the auxiliary battery, take care what you fit to make sure it can tolerate being charged at voltages up to 15.7 volts as this is the high end of the charging system found in both the D3 and the RRS.

I am seriously considering fitting an aux battery for running HF/VHF/UHF kit but I have no idea how to get it charging when the vehicle is running. Any pointers??
