Mixing tyres on different axles - adviseable or best avoided
Evening all
We are due to head south to the Alps next week (just as the skilift operators go on strike ) so I got the winter tyres and wheels out yesterday to check over. Found that two of the tyres are effectively dead, but the other two are still virtually 'as new' with less than 5k on them.
The tyres are Vredestein Wintrac 4xtreme and are sized at 255/55R19. However, Vredestein no longer manufacture these tyres, and their current offerings are as rare as rocking horse droppings and priced accordingly.
I am therefore thinking of buying two more winter tyres of a different type and putting these on one axle, with the other axle having the Vredestein. However, this doesn't sit well with my OCD - I have always tried to have all four tyres the same.
To balance my OCD is the fact that the French authorities will be requiring vehicles to have at least two winter tyres fitted for next winter, ie on one axle. Similarly, the tyre places I have contacted have said that having different brands is not a problem so long as they are the same size and type (ie 'winter', 'summer', 'off road' or 'all season' etc)
Thoughts appreciated from the collective please.
Cheers
WB
PS These will be fitted to SWMBO's D4. If the consensus is that they should all be the same then I think I will take my D3, albeit with twice the mileage at 285k, as I have a set of BFGs with the 3 peaks for that. It is just that the thought of 1,250 motorway miles each way appeals a lot more in a D4 than my old faithful!Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

I wouldn’t worry about it, as long as they are all winter types then all should be fine.
Just hope you (or more accurately your estate) doesn’t sue me!

Funny you should mention 'estates' and 'suing' in the same sentence Del - I am currently trying to obtain probate for my MIL's estate and have been struggling with her will. Finally had my fears confirmed last week by the lawyers who had drawn up her will - it was/is invalid as they had missed out two key paragraphs FFS

Sorry, didn’t mean to put my size 11 in there.
Re tyres, they’ll all give similar level of grip in similar conditions so unless you’re taking the car to the extremes (prob past what it could do) then there shouldn’t be any issues.

Might be worth ringing the Probate call centre (0300 303 0648) as if there is enough in the will to define her wishes it may still be enforced. Don't trust solicitors, my mother's tried to hand out money from her estate which wasn't in the account she stipulated in the will.

I have changed both tyres on the same axle when one has had a puncture as a traction difference side to side can put the car off line under heavy braking. In the worst case you could have one side trying to lock up before the other, depending on the ABS to help is not ideal. Different tyres front to back won't have that effect. When I have a choice I will always try to have all four the same hence at the moment waiting for the tyres I want to come into stock.A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.

Belated thanks HF
Tyre issue has (hopefully) been resolved - have traced an identical pair with 7-8mm tread for £90 delivered so waiting to see what turns up on Monday. Even if they are a one trip wonder that is still worth it.
Ref probate - we have already been in touch with the Probate call centre who are being surprisingly helpful and understanding, even if the lawyers aren't!Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE
