Mixing 2 stroke oil with diesel

Hi , Ben told that there is a benefit to adding small amounts of Mineral based 2 Stroke to the diesel on my Disco 4 , has anyone had experience of this and what were the results ? Cheers

It was flavour of the month a couple of years back - must use mineral oil not synthetic.

Logic seems sound - the injection pump works at very fine tolerances and adding 2 stroke oil can help with lubrication - but if everything is Ok with good fuel the question is whether the 2 stroke doing anything - a bit like taking vitamins if you are healthy and on a good balanced diet.

The other suggested benefit is that if you get some fuel contamination from water, the 2 stroke oil may help protect the injection pump by providing additional lubrication.

There were also thoughts that 2 stroke improved fuel consumption and produced less pollutants and smoke etc and may the engine run smoother - no evidence on this aspect what so ever.

Like many people I did use it and it may have been helpful or it may have not - what I do know was that it was a pain to put into the tank with each fill - using a long spout funnel that always seemed to spill a little oil in its storage area.

I noticed no difference in the running of the car - either before use, during use and after I stopped using it, so not benefit there. I have not had a contamination incident so no idea if it would have helped.

I do not use it now and my engine is still running fine without it.

I have been using 2 stroke since about 2010, I used it in my Range Rover Sport followed by my current Freelander 2 and Disco 4. I do notice that the engine is much quieter with the 2 stroke added but I don't think there is any improvement in fuel consumption or performance.

Two stroke is supposed to keep the internals of the engine clean and free from carbon build-up which could have helped when I recently changed the Glow Plugs, all six came out perfectly and were completely free of carbon.

Try it and make your own mind up but be sure to use "FC2 or "FD" grade, I put 500ml to a full tank.

If you search for "2 stroke in diesel" you will find about a weeks worth of reading. Thumbs Up

Big question is, what about engines with a DPF?- is it detrimental to them. I used it for 10 years in my old D3 with no problems, not so sure about the D4 with DPF Confused
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

need to be low ash 2 stroke i think for dpf use.

Injector fouling is increased with 2 stroke according to this test.

Theres a long thread on here somewhere about 2 stroke oil where I posted a link from the makers of one brand of 2 stroke oil, who say not to use it in diesels and as they make and sell the stuff Im sure they wouldnt just say that for fun, after la a sale is a sale?

Over the years I have probably tried all the additives/posh fuels in a variety if diesel cars and tbh cant say I noticed any difference, sometimes I think that sounds or starts different after adding some treatment, but in reality it was most likely a placebo effect.

You can buy it cheap enough and it certainly wont kill your car, so try it and report back Thumbs Up

on our old A3 with pump-diesel, adding a bottle of 2SO every other fillup resulted in less clatter and engine noise and a smoother ride.

same on my old Disco2 Td5.

on my Puma and previous D4 SDV6, it made no difference, but I still used it when touring in the rural areas as you never know how contaminated the diesel is - so if they had put some parrafin or if there was water in the diesel, the 2SO would help lubricate things.
