Forgot to fuel at work yesterday and so needed to add some on the way home to get back to work this morning. Added £10 (7 or so litres) of UNLEADED as I'm an idiot and was on automatic (only fill up the other car at this garage normally).
Didn't notice at the time, although wondered why the distance to empty didn't increase but put that down to it only being a small amount. I've only just noticed now when I've gone to fill up at work and the misfuel device has been activated. Reset it and filled with Diesel.
I've travelled around 48 miles since adding the unleaded.
Got me wondering/worrying though - where are the 7 litres of unleaded?!
Paul.

Was it on empty when you put the 7 litres in?
Did it run OK?
Fill it full of Diesel and put a litre of 2 stroke (organic) in the tank

As adam as asked was it empty when you put the unleaded in and if so did you drive the car, if yes how far.. Or did you fill with diesel when you realized what you had done.
If you filled up with diesel and then drove the car you should be ok, but I would stick 500mls of two stroke oil in the tank for a couple of fills just to help lubricate all the parts again.
I am not sure if this misfuel error is logged in the car, if so you need to get it cleared..

It was showing as about 40miles left to run.
Seems to be running fine, hadn't noticed anything until I saw the misfuel device. I'm guessing there shouldn't be any fuel in the tank (otherwise what's the point of the misfuel device, but if it's not in the tank where are the 7 litres?)

40miles left to run when the 7 litres were added. I've travelled about 48 miles until realising (about 8 last night, then 40 this morning) and have just filled up with diesel and driven a couple of hundred yards and parked.

I always though that the triggering of the misfuel device stopped the fuel flow.......manual states:
When activated, the yellow misfuel protector
will be visible inside the filler neck. It will
prevent fuel flow into the tank. Before fuelling
can continue with the correct fuel, the device
will need to be reset.
So I am a bit confused how you got 7 litres in without it being all over your shoes Cheers Ian

Exactly what I'm thinking! My shoes/clothes definitely did not get wet, and there was no spraying of fuel everywhere and also the fuel pump didn't cut out.

I believe all the miss fuel devise is supposed to do issignificantly slow down the way fuel goes in so as you realise there is an issue. From my own expierience when the gauge in car says 40 miles left to go, there is infact a lot more to go so by my guess you probably had a couple of gallons of diesel in the tank at least. As others have said, fill up with diesel and add 2 stroke oil.

If my D4 is anything to go by, there is more fuel left in the tank than it tells you. On my D3, I could run it to zero miles, and get a full 80 litres in.
On my new D4, even with 0 miles left, I can only get 70 litres in it. So if this is the case, the petrol you put in was probably diluted enough to allow it to run.
Whether its done any damage or not is a guess. If I were you, I would fill it and keep filling it with derv, and also add some 2so.
I would not involve LR because they will want to change everything from the wheel up!

i run a D4 as comp car and noticed that if you put less than £15 worth of fuel in the gauge on the dash will not show any increase in level and the miles left are the same BUT the miles to empty then run down VERY slowly
if you would have put say £20 in it would have registered on the gauge TLO has left the building.......

Are you sure that you put unleaded in. Have you checked your receipt ? I would doubt it would run if there was virtually only unleaded in it. Club N.E.R.D's

Yes unfortunately confirmed by the receipt.
The 2 stroke oil people have mentioned, is there a particular type to use or not use?

Yes -
A mineral 2 stroke oil to JASO FC specification is the most commonly available, something like Castrol Actevo 2 T.

I've just acquired some 2 stroke oil...
It's 'Sainsbury's 2 Stroke Motorcycle Oil'
The write-up on the back says it's a 'top quality mineral oil and contains low ash'
'Meets or exceeds the following: API TC, JASO FB'
Is this ok to use? How much should I be putting in? The tank should be pretty full at the moment.
Thanks guys for all the responses.

Stick half a litre 500 mls in a full tank if its a litre bottle then use it the other half on your next fill..
