Hi Ent,
How long does the unit last on one charge? I presume you can get a USB cable to charge on the move??

I'd say it will last about 5 hours on a charge. You can charge it from your usb socket or buy a 12v car charger to usb plug type thing. They are spot on much better than the SIRF III based chipsets. It states on the box that it can track forty-odd satellites but the max I've had is 8 at anyone time(something to do with the earth being in the way?) but with 8 satellites it is pretty accurate. I think the Holux is based on the MTK chipset too isn't it?
My MTK usb receiver can often pick up 11 or so satellites at a time, but as you mention, anything over 7 or 8 is really overkill and won't give you much more accuracy - it is however handy to have lock on as many satellites as possible for when some of them drop-out as you are driving around.
When using 1:25000 scale maps it's even accurate enough to draw a track on the actual side of the road that I'm driving down.
I know you're talking about bluetooth ones, but I would recommend a USB receiver if you're going to be using it on a laptop in the car - it's much easier and you can forget about charging it. 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Holux may use the said chipset but the Holox uses a RFMD set up. The only advantage of going for a Bluetooth receiver is you can use them with PDA's or Smartphones which is what mine was used for prior to running Memory Map. Club Exped trailer

Oh just one little thing. I first used a re radiating gps antenna http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/reradiating.php This worked great with the lap top, however the D3 navigation would loose gps signal when the re radiating antenna was pluged in. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.
