The 'leather' cover on my steering wheel rim is now starting to 'melt'!!!
funny - didn't think leather melted???
I believe Pelyma [and someone else] experienced this and got the steering wheel changed under warranty.
Anybody else have this problem?
Any idea what causes this?
Is there a TSB on it?
I want to go to my dealer with as much info as possible. I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

If they won't change it under warranty, the wheels are surprisingly cheap. I replaced the nasty plastic one on my old Base model for a leather trimmed one via Nick at Yeovil and it was only around £60 I Think. Was expecting it to be a lot more. 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Mine sort of 'melted' too - it has just been replaced under warranty (it got really hot in spain and my hands actually started sticking to it - it felt horrible amd left a terrible finnish to the surface)

Out of interest, how many different types of steering wheel are there?
I remember seeing a S in dealer's showroom and it had a one-piece obviously plastic steering wheel.
I have a euro-spec SE which has a 2 or 3 piece 'leather' steering wheel that is most definitely not real leather.
I've also heard of other 'real' leather ones.....
Can somebody clear up the differences and confirm if there are easily interchangeable (maybe with part numbers)? I would really like to have a proper leather wheel if they're not too expensive. 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Only 2 as far as I know, plastic and leather but with various combinations of switch panels for audio, cruise and PTI etc. 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

My car had been in for some warranty work including the melted steering wheel.
They have put a new wheel on under warranty at no charge to me, although the dealer did say it was unusual to get this done under warranty as it was normally considered wear and tear. However, I pointed out that at only 18,000 miles it should not have worn out when it is supposed to last the life of the vehicle!
Anyway - nice new wheel on it now.

I got mine replaced last year under warranty, when the summers in Britain used to be hot and sunny. Do they do heated steering wheels now??

I dont think they would dare - ifthe wheel melts in the sun it would drip into the foot well if electrically heated

My new one seems to be a bit 'harder' than the old one - by that I mean it is sort of grainy leather and seems tougher - the old one was a smoother and softer leather, if that makes sense?
Lets see if that makes it last longer
