Maxxraxx 5 - securing bikes safely
Hi,
I've just managed to get hold of a used Maxxraxx 5 and I managed to put it all on the disco yesterday with no issue. However when I put my bike on to test it out I was a little concerned about the stability of the bike on there. I'm worried that if I taking a corner to fast to send the bike flying off the rack? Am i just being over paranoid?
I also did consider that maybe I need a cross bar fitting for my bike as it is quite low and hence a wheel was sticking up in the air:

I never had a problem with 4 bikes on mine, you have got the ratchet strap done up very tightly? The extra straps that fit into the tailgate help a lot too.DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

I have done the ratchet up as tight as it will go but I did wonder if the ratchet isn't working optimally? How can I tell if its tight enough?

I regularly carry 2-4 bikes on my MaxxRaxx, in fact I prefer it to my Strada. I've never had any issues with it in the 10+ years and thousands of miles I've used it. I've also never used the straps to attach it to the top of the boot lid and its been perfectly fine. Mine is attached to a fixed tow bar.New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

If you have the extended piece you are supposed to have the extra straps because of the increased height.DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

I'm not using the extended piece but I'm thinking it may be the ratchet not working optimally now.
Is it a problem if the bike isn't level as the cross bar is low or should I not be worried providing it fits on the cradle?

My wife’s bike had no proper crossbar and that carried just fine. Speak to Maxxraxx they aren’t that far from you really and very helpful. DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

You can buy 'cross bars' from Halfords to help with carrying them. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

I had a lock at the ratchet and it looks like it’s slightly wonky and the pins are not straight so think it needs replacing!

I spoke to Daniel at Maxxraxx and he sorted me out. Ended up needing a new topbar as the bottom hook was also bent so there were concerns that the integrity might have been effected. I can confirm the strap now goes nice and tight and ‘pings’ as suggested it should,
Have to say fantastic customer service from Daniel and Maxxraxx.

That’s good to hear. I just got some spare parts for an Atera rack we’ve had for years from roofbox.co.uk. It’s good when people stand by the products they sell!
