Sadly the dog died from auto immune anemia, the tail chewing happened whilst an in-patient at Liverpool university hospital, he’d woke from the anaesthetic and was unattended, and as one of the conditions of his illness was skin mites he was itching so took a chunk out of the tail, it was healing and he was discharged where he decided he didn’t like the tail anymore so chewed through the remaining piece and ate it.

He was a Doberman, we spent £16000 over 8 months on treatment, he had 8 blood transfusions and at one stage appeared to be getting better, steroid, cyclosporine and other immune suppressing drugs were used but his red blood cells continued to be destroyed by his white cells, as a last resort we had his spleen removed which he adapted to well, but it wasn’t to be and he was taken to Rutland house who had taken over his treatment after the tail chewing incident but 4 days after he simply couldn’t take anymore and died peacefully.
