Masking non-xenon headlamps when going to France
I am off to France with the D3 later this year and need to do the headlights. I don't have the Xenons. Does anyone know if a masking set exists for these lights and if so how good was it. Is there any alternative other than buying a set of "Johny Foreigner " headlamp units.
Also I have managed to crack the passenger side wing mirror housing. The glass popped out but didn't break and all the motors still work but the black plastic housing is cracked. How easy is it to change and can you get the housing on its own without buying all the gubbins.

the light issue has been discused before and most opinions are dont bother masking.

Masking sets for French cars to be used in the UK must be the lowest-selling item in France - ever! Read into that what you will....Cheers

Theres a very old TSB relating to masking non-xenons (due to the lack of reference marks on the light unit), I think the dealer will do it FoC if you ask them but you'll have to buy the masking kit from them...

the run of the mill ferry port masking kits is okay ( dont recall the name but its the best seller ) specify LR3. Its easy to do .
Im with you. Jolly Gendarmes ? were pulling cars off the autoroute on my last trip through France back in the summer. Seemed to be all English motors. The average continental driver probably has the spare set of lights and reflective jacket etc. Whereas the brits probably dont.

I have a D3 with standard lights, I read in the handbook this afternoon that there is a catch on each light set that can be flicked for driving abroad

I thought that applied to the xenons. The manual is inclined to be a bit misleading at times. IMHO!

I am french, leaving in the UK, going to rance often with my disco, I never bother masking my headlights.
I have never been tld off by the gendarme.
For the spair set of bulbs (If you are saying that the light was working when you left and you have a spare, you have some chance to get out with out the fine. If you don t have a spair you can be sure to have the fine).
the reflecting jacket it is For Spain it is conpulsory to have the jacket IN THE CAR not in the boots (I have been fined last summer because I had a jacket but it was in the boot!!!!! In france the reflecting jacket is complusory (I think!!!)Arno

Reflective jacket, one per person and all kept within the car is compulsory over here in Belgium, also fire extinguisher, first aid kit, warning triangle and bulb kit. Phew now have I any room for luggage???

you don't actually need jackets - you can get those hi-vis 'string vest' sleeveless types which roll up to practically nothing. very useful and cheap as chips.

When I said Jackets, I meant those one, the ones without the leaves and very easy to fold.
Do you know if it is compulsory in the car for France?
Are you sure it is one per person?
