How many times did you visit a country other than Europe

Just found my old passports and found that I had 51 visas from the Sudan back in the 70's - 80's.

Flights were via BA VC10 that were ex RAF, with half the seats facing backwards before they were replaced by Tristars.

Back in those days the wildlife was incredible.

We were based in the south and Saturday night BBQ was always dependent on the road kill (purposely) from the night before.

My record was arriving in Khartoum only to be confronted with “didn't you receive my telex”. NO.

“You won't be needed until next month ” so it was back on the same plane and back to the UK.

Walked back up the drive at home (before mobile phones) to be told “what are you doing here”.

Two days later a telex saying “I made a mistake come back ASAP”.

Things were so safe in those days that you could head off on your own to the local villages with no problems, No AK's just spears.

Those were the days.

Lots in the Caribbean

Ascension Island - passing through and had a few days in the hotel there
St Helena - twice
Tristan d’Cuna - somewhere on the laptop I have a photo of a land rover next to the sign claiming it to be the remotest inhabited island in the world
South Georgia & Falkland Islands, have still got a local falklands driving license somewhere around from when I had access to a civilian ex mod series 3 there.

Many other places but no crossed the Pacific Ocean
 Disco 4
Burstner motorhome
BMW 225e (only 1/2 way to electric)

Excluding the EU, think that was the question, I have a sister who’s on holiday has visited Japan, China x 6 (likes the place) India, Tibet, Loas, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines, Australia, Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan, Turkey, UAE, Syria, Iran (incl. when the west bombed it, said the locals were fine about it) plus probably missed a few places out.

She point blank refuses to visit the US, says it’s a damn awful place and people.

Asks me why I haven’t bothered travelling. Quite simply I’ve got no desire to. I’ve been to one or two places in the EU and I am not happy being away & i am always glad to get back. Can’t see me ever going abroad again tbh.

Flew into Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia from Moscow in an IL62 - Russian equivalent of a VC10 but without the technology Laughing burst two tyres on landing and the undercarriage started smoking so the airport fire service came out very swiftly and dealt with it - well when I say fire service it was a single guy on the back of a pick up with a hand pump and a bucket of water Laughing

United Kingdom

Been to the USA twice - first time was a couple of weeks after 9/11. That was interesting - a people living in fear and many simply amazed that we'd still got on a plane and gone for our holiday. SWMBO told me I absolutely wasn't allowed to mention to people in Boston that the UK had been living with domestic bomb threats for many years thanks to their financing of a certain Irish group! Apparently it wouldn't have helped, or something. Laughing

Second time was a road trip in California, Nevada and Arizona. The seed idea for that trip was a friend racing at the Reno Air Races. Sadly, his aircraft had issues but we still went and had a great day and evening as guests. Then a trip seeing a few sights including Death Valley, Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, Meteor Crater and many others. A good 3 week trip.

Otherwise been to NZ twice - love the place and luckily SWMBO sister lives there so we get to spend time with them at the beginning and end of the trip which is great.

Hong Kong as a 3-night layover on one of the NZ trips. Dubai, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brisbane as refuelling stops on the other NZ trip so just a few hours each time in the transit "lounge".

So a bit of a long haul beginner really compared to some in here. Have done some good trips in Europe but they weren't asked for. Thumbs Up

Travelled mostly on business. Lost count of the times to Huston. Who want to live there? Romania was where we tried to get over the Carpathian Mountains in an old Russian helicopter. It just ran out of steam around 12000 feet and we had to get out and walk until we got lower down. The railway to Berlin was something else definitely not for the faint hearted .
Now retired and no longer roam.

Lost count of the all visits to India, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Oman, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Saudi, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Egypt, USA & Canada

Only been to Japan 3 Times, Libya once and Chile once.

I used to fill the large passports in about 5 years due to the constant travels but it was sadly all for work.

After 18 months away, I’m about to start back on my Middle East visits after being in Europe twice this month and not sure if I’m looking forward to it !
