How many miles is too many ?

Hi all

I’m Currently in the process of looking for a d3- low tax band - for playing in. Will do limited miles as got a D5 and be something I can start tinkering with for learning.

How many miles on an engine is too many? I guess it’s down to how it’s been looked after and anything can go at any point?

Thanks

No idea

I sold my last Discovery TD5 with 170k on it and it was still going strong, nothing wrong with it and I had it 11 years, just fancied a change.

My 3 had 90k on it when I bought it 3 years ago and its now on 130k, if the engine lasts, I plan on keeping it as long as possible. To be honest mileage doesn't really concern me.

Mine is an 05 manual with 237k on it now. Just come back from a weekend landing in North Wales and it is still going strong.
Smells a bit like a bus when running but starts and runs a dream with good economy too.
Has been well maintained which clearly helps.

With modern cars its not so much thee engine its the rest of the car that may sting you, gearboxes/diffs/weird random stuff due to the high miles that no ones come across before.
I think big miles are fine if you did them as you know the history.

How the miles are achieved is another question. If the vehicle has been sat for hours at a time on the motorway cruising along, it'll likely be in better shape all round than one that has spent its life doing frequent short urban journeys.

My old TDV8 did c.30k miles a year for three years and it was at its most reliable and easy to live with during that period. And it did those miles when already 80k miles "old"! I regret selling it with 175k+ miles on the clock.

As everyone who 'knows about Land Rovers' tells me, my D3 is a ticking time bomb. It has been ticking for 14 years and 122k miles.

Tick tock....

They'll be related to the people who like to tell me that my RRS (and the previous one) are "rubbish off road" and "will get stuck when it snows"... Rolling Eyes Laughing Laughing

Never ever ever think such thoughts. ^^^^^^ I thought “she’s running really well” as I came off a roundabout in NW Norway, then wafted past a truck. Then a mile later the engine blew & she was on the way to the scrapper. They hear things, they know. Thumbs Up

I have a V6S Auto 2005.Had it from new. It's on nearly 143000 miles now and stills runs the way it always has, beautifully. I have had it serviced regularly. You need to watch as it gets older, its easy to skimp on the big services and go for the basic which is cheaper. That's the fluids. Just had the belts done for the second time and oil pump done by Flack but the old oil pump looked OK.

The only thing that you need to watch is the alternator. Went at about 70 -80 thousand. Can leave you stranded as it doesn't run for long with no charge.

Done all the usual things,Suspension compressor x2, intercooler hose, steering linkage, steering arms inner, lower from suspension arms, upper rear suspension arms, tailgate lock, aircon radiator, pulley tensioner, brake hoses and calliper seals, panhard rods, refurbed the alloys, 2 batteries, windscreen washer jets.Has a Chinese windscreen which is fine.

No problems yet with EGR's. Think i'll change the drivers seat cover next as its starting to show through at the edge. I think 2005 was a good year.

It's been great.

Only thing is Central London Clean air charge.

I'll probably keep it for a while yet.

May it last you many, many thousands of miles more. Well more than the 19k miles more my identical car did before the engine dies a grizzly death far from home. Sadly “no expense spared” counts for squat when those bearing shells rotate and cut off the oil flow. Whistle Whistle

Bitter and twisted, moi? Absatidellingtoolie as me and that car had had many adventures over its life. She’s missed. Big Cry Big Cry

I have this question every time I buy a vehicle. Over the years I've gotten into the habit of looking at the service schedule and calculating at what point major work is due and then looking at the service record for correlation. Over the last few years I've tried to buy cars around the 100k and bikes at the 10k points. It's not so much the mechanical issues that have/could occur but more the really awkward stuff that wears naturally with use. The sort of things that never get sorted. I'm talking about wear to trim, carpets, bodywork, interiors, scratches, faded upholstery/leather, loose mountings, general bodywork condition and on it goes. Those sorts of jobs invariably either are expensive or fiddly to do, or both and therefore run a high risk of not getting done.

For me, when I buy a car I want it as young as possible. When I bought my LR3, I found loads of examples at >200k. I'm sure they were all good but for another 5% to 10% of the price I found examples at 100k or so, which I finally bought. If the maths meant better value I would have looked more closely at the high milers but for just a bit more cash, why wouldn't I go for a younger model (I'm sure there's a parallel there).

Of course, as someone above me has stated, it does completely depend on how well the car has been looked after so further investigation is necessary. That is true for every car I buy however, that happens anyway.

Anyway, just my 10p. Ultimately, we buy what we want on the day that we see it...knowing we will be repairing them...
