How many litres of Power Steering Fluid required?

Hi,

I want to flush my power steering with new fluid. ANyone know how many litres it holds?

I was planning to either suck the old fluid out of the header tank or drain it from below and then fill with fresh. Just not sure how many litres I'll need to refill the system with.

Capacity wise it’s not much - officially it’s 0.89 liters.

I’m not sure about draining it from below but I guess it’s possible. Don’t let air in the system (so have constantly someone fill the reservoir).

The way I did it 3 years ago was suck some fluid from the reservoir, fill to max, turn steering wheel left/right to have the fluid mix with the old, repeat. TBH I’m not sure if it made any difference. Only thing I noticed was that the color of the fluid became lighter but other than that nothing noticeable.

I used Pentosin CHF 11S but several other fluids are equivalent. Fuchs acquired Pentosin so it’s called Fuchs Titan 11S nowadays. I had two liters of fluid and spent most of it.

Hope this helps.

Hi, Cheers for the quick reply. My steering seems fine. The fluid just looks a bit murky. I saw a youtube video from powerful uk draining it at the bottom and refilling so thought I'd give that a go. Might be easier following your method though. Thumbs Up

I'll buy a couple of litres and give it a whirl. Just didn't want to empty it out and then find I hadn't got enough to refill, but also didn't want to buy 5 litres if I only needed 1. Laughing

Yeah, I would call the fluid that I had “murky”, too. Describes it well.

A clarification: when turning left/right I turned to maximum (lock), then on the next fill all the way to the other side, etc.
