Manual Gearbox Whine

Hi,

I have a D3 O5 manual with 89k on the clock. There is a whine coming from my gearbox / diff - not sure which. It doesn't sound too bad and reminds me of my old series 2.

I've read lots on here about double flushes on auto boxes but just wondered if this was a known problem on maunual boxes and what should I do?

are you sure its not the transfer box.

I had a whine and a change of the tfer box oil cleared it up Thumbs Up

Good question -not sure what it is. Is the transfer box known for this? Also how easy is it to change the oil?

I dont think its a common issue, but mine has done 120,000 miles.

i went on to change all the oils in the gearbox and diffs. it running much smoother and quieter now

its really easy to change as long as you can raise the car on some ramps or old railway/garden sleepers.

If your series 2 was like mine thats quite loud Laughing an oil change cant hurt but is it noisy if you let it roll or is it only on load ?
Don’t worry it is supposed to sound like that...honest

Its just background noise. Its not loud but I know its there. Perhaps I'm just sensitive to it now that I've heard it. I think I'll change the Oil and see what difference that makes. It's due a service soon anyway so I'll just get it done at the same time.

This sounds like what has developed on my 55 manual with 70K behind it - belief is not the diff, transfer box oil replenished.

Currently got NSF failing wheel bearing but noise is not a grind but a whine which seems less when sloshing around in wet conditions (plenty of this week !!!!!!). Going to throw the 17's back on to see if that changes anything otherwise bit of a mystery Confused

Thoughts ................
