I am looking to get a D3 for 20k miles solo and 5k towing, what do you think. Also how does a chip affect this choice ??

Depends how you like to drive, towing is easier with an auto but I prefer a manual for road & offroad driving, a remap doesn't affect the choice, it works equally well on both

Auto every time.
But if you want the quickest speed/take off, then Manual will be slightly quicker. TFC has manual and there are arguments that Manual is 'better' for off roading (rocking to get out of a dip etc) but for most, the Auto is more than capable.
The TinTent brigade can probably provide more experienced response, but IMO the Auto will provide a smoother towing experience.

If looking at a TDV6, an auto. Offroad an auto will be more robust. In heavy going (crawling) in a manual a lot of clutch slip is required.
This is from experience as I have had manuals and autos, and now will only use autos.06 TDV6 SE with many LR and after-market extras. Used only on weekends and trips out west.

I agree once you have had an auto off road you will never go back to a manual. This is my second auto 4wd
and they are fantastic. the only draw back is you cant tow stast it.
