I have a 2015 D4 with stop start. The stop start function has not worked for some time due to the small auxiliary battery needing replacement. As I prefer it without the stop start I don't plan on replacing the smaller battery or making use of the stop start function in the future. When it comes to replacing the main battery, can I use a normal lead acid rather than AGM battery to reduce cost?

AGM batteries (allegedly) work out the same value ... cost more but last longer.
I'd stick with AGM ... JLR started using just AGM at some point with D4s.

If you haven’t a warning lamp on and you fit a new main battery your SS will work. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Eco light is showing but main battery is all good. Just wondering for when the time comes to replace it if using a lead acid will cause problems

It’s the small auxiliary battery that needs changing to get the light off, SS may or may not work, if it doesn’t it’s ready for a new main battery although that doesn’t necessarily mean the main battery is completely goosed, just nearly goosed It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,

If you fit a lead-acid battery, it won't last long as the AGM charge strategy is very different - and a higher voltage in lower temperatures.
Purely replacing the starter battery won't re-enable the autostop, neither will replacing the secondary battery, only a reset of the BMS together with the failed battery will re-enable autostop.

No reason why you can't fit a lead acid battery, but it will not charge as fast as an AGM unless the CCF is changed and even then it will not accept charge as fast, if you do long journeys it won't be a problem. There is no doubt AGM are superior, no acid to spill out and will still work upside down and accept charge at lower volts.
Although good practice to reset the BCM, it is not essential as the BCM will quickly learn that there is a new battery. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I can't help thinking that if it's upside down charging is probably the least of your worries.

But leaking battery acid might be ! I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

A new AGM battery can be got for under 130.... don't pay LR prices....
Also, I have replaced both batteries and reset with IID and still the Start/Stop doesn't work.
There is a TSB for the issue which involves replacing the module next to the small aux battery.... so replacing the battery(s) doesn't always get the S/S going....
Mine is under warranty and I might get the TSB done.... I might not though as I don't really like the start/stop! I just like everything to work though.... its rare in a LR A mod a week until I have nothing to improve or add.
