Hi
I am thinking of swapping my disco 2 for a 54-57 plate disco 3 auto.
I have heard some horror stories regarding mpg when not towing so dread what they will do dragging a twin axle van.
It would be helpful if some of you guys can put my mind at rest, I will only be doing around 3-4000 miles a year in itl

Assuming a diesel drinker work on 25 - 26mpg average. You'll get better on some fills and worse on others. If you get better it's a bonus.

Well if your only doing 3-4k miles I wouldn't worry.
I have a D2 for my work, towing up to 2 tons regularly and about half a tank 240-300 miles about £60 ish
My D3 weekend use, about half a tank, £70 ish less miles but no towing. But far comfier and I seem to have a heavier right foot in it.
Totally different drives but both great in their own rights

Just pulled my twin axle elddis from Macclesfield to Barmouth and back again averaged 24mpg You're not afraid of the dark are you ?
I was going to say at 4000miles a year, what is the issue I've been known to do that a month! Mark.

I have only been a d3 owner for 6 week now and have the twin axle caravan and I am averageing 24 / 26 miles to the gal on short runs still to have a good run with the caravan on .
I had a mondeo 2.2 tdci before the d3 and was getting about the same miles to the gal form it when towing the caravan .

I have just gone d2 to d4 about 25% heavier at all times on mpg but twice the power and big grin on face. The on board fuel computer is optomistic by 3 mpg so my indicated 24mpg average is actually 21 which is backed up with a calculator at the pump when on knees in tears. Driving like an old fart on the motorway I did once get 29 mpg which showed on dash as 36mpgD4

My best was 36.1 actual, warm day cruising at 60 over 350 miles. Worst 12.something playing in the desert.

Made the move from a discovery 2 and find the mpg comparable for most journeys. There's a huge difference in towing performance and now steadily averaging 24.2mpg towing a 1800kg t/a caravan. Solo 25.1mpg (real not dash figures).

after 2 D3's and now a D4, with two different twin axle 'vans, I have never managed 24mpg, usually around 19mpg, been down to 16, and very rarely 21.
Great towcar, but economy out the window.

I'm with you Al, 20mpg towing is a good day - with a twin axle. Keeping the speed down below 55 helps. But it's a brick towing a brick!Mark.

I regularly tow my twin axle and am so pleased with the ability of it and the fact that I can get where I want to go regardless of weather and road situations I tend not to think about the mpg.
Having said that I always tell my wife it's doing at least 30 mpg D3 Metropolis Bonatti Grey-Alpaca Leather-adaptive headlights-fridge-EGR blanking kit-Harmen Karden-Cruise-4x4 info enabled-Tinted Windows-Heated F&R Seats-Rosen rear Entertainment-LED'S everywhere -Smoked Side Repeaters-Rear Aircon-Vredestein Wintrac 4 Extreme-Puddle and Footwell Lamps-Stainless Steel Side Protection Tubes- NEW ASHTRAY ( thanks to dsd1036 )

I'd really love to know how some folk get such fantastic towing figures? I tow a van c.1500kg, and am generally pretty light footed - steady acceleration, anticipate well, (have nothing to prove, unlike some when towing!), and yet the best I achieved with a manual D3 was 25 mpg (nice warm day, with a gentle tail wind, and all motorway), with 20-22 being the norm. Towing the same van with an auto D4 is roughly the same, but dips under the 20 mark on occasions depending upon terrain.
All the figures are brim to brim calculated. Please, please tell me how I might achieve consistently mid-20's when towing such a light van for the car?
