Yep, my friend has the 245/70R17, which worked great.
The 275/65R18 ate away a bit of plastic in the rear wheel arches on my vehicle, but its done now and we live with it.

THe silver D3 has the 245's and the blue one has 275's. Both look great, and both performed great

Hi Baben

How much plastic eating are we talking about (any chance of a photo) ?...is it all arches ? and once through the plastic what else has the potential to get damaged underneath I.E. does the paint come off the arch.

Also, how much tyre contact do you attribute to the weight your carrying against just normal wheel compression whilst off-road.

THere's a post about this somewhere, but basically there is a rectangular plastic bit in the rear end of the wheel arch. Behind this is a metal joint, which has the paint eaten away, but no further damage. Seeing as the vehicle bottomed out many times over fast undulations, I suspect that most of this was due to the load, but that said, the tyres are a bit big.

Can't take pics till my missus gives me permission to use the landy.

Tyres

Hi Baben,

I am also quite interested in seeing the pics of how the wheel arc looks inside. Was it just the front wheels? How was your turning radius effected?

Just been thinking, when LR did the G4 challange, surely they should have seen and said something similiar with the tyres they used, think it was goodyear MTRs?

Oops, I see in my previous post I said rear of the arch. Its the part of the wheel arch in front of the rear wheels only. Have a look at the front of the rear wheel arch, about half way up you will see a rectangular piece of plastic sticking out. this is what fouls the 275/65R18, but only under severe load/bottoming. With the 17" tyres you have no such issues
For the G4 they used 19" wheels with Goodyear MTR's

Boet, I did more than 4000km thru the worst tracks and passes of Namibia and Botswana, and another 3000km on the "tar" roads, and used every suspension setting available, and there was no problem. The only time the tyres touched was when we bounced over the drifts at high speed, and the suspension bottomed. We were way overloaded, 4-up, fridge, roofrack etc. so the rear end was a bit soft.
When I got back I compared the tread depth to a new tyre I took along as a spare, and there was less than 1mm difference!
if they come out with a slightly smaller version that doesn't touch at all, then I would say it is the ultimate for this vehicle off-road.

Hi baben,

Yes, its me again with some questions. I was looking through your pics again and have a question. What make is the roofrack shown in the general photos. The photos of the trip showed a frontrunner rack, but what is the other make?

Sorry about the silence

The rack in the other pics is the genuine LandRover Expedition roof rack.

I took it off and bought the Front Runner 'cos I needed to be able to handle a lot more weight. The standard rack is a lot quiter, and very pretty. In the pictures, you can only see the lower section of the rack. There are actually 2 sections, which can be taken apart with a bit of ingenuity. The Front Runner rack is much more robust, and has 10 crossbars compared to 5 on the LandRover rack.

I used riv-nuts to put it back together, so now I can choose whether to use the full rack or not. The full rack doesn't fit into a standard garage, but the lower section does.

I doubt I will ever use the LandRover part again, as I have the FrontRunner one, so if you want it make me an offer (ask your LR dealer the new price, but sit down before you do Smile ) . It has been modded, as I said, but it has actually never been used in anger.

Mods on LR's .....have been doing it since 1996 on LR's and after 17 vehicles ... still no problem with warrantee. And I play open cards with my dealer on all mods done ....so depends on who you deal with ....they can be asses if they want to be.

On tyres ...after looking at all the options ...I have replaced my 18 inch rims with 19 inch rims and fitted the Goodyear Wrangler 255/55x16 MTR's as per G4 spec. Exact same size as original so no rubbing issues. LR SA is bringing them in ....before I used to pick up stones the size of peas .....Friday I arrive dhome with a Uno stuck in the tread 8)

On the roofrack ..... Wink bought the LRR one last week. Painful.

I have also done this www.turbochip.co.za Elton sorted me out. Little turbo lag now ........ compared to original, no turbo lag and enough torque to twist your finger right off.

Now I am looking for a low profile, behind the bumper winch mount ...any suppliers in SA?

I see LR are selling the 19" 6 spoke rims for R2 571.89 per rim (special offer) and the MTR's for R4 065.31 (less 20% for you voucher ~ R3 252). TWT wants R4K per tire.

19" + MTR

Not a bad deal I guess.
But doesn't it burn your Censored that you pay half a bar for a 4x4 then have to change the wheels so you can get decent offroad tyres!

OK, rant and rave over..

How does the MTR compare to the STT in terms of sidewall plies, tread etc?
