Scotland 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Bonatti GreyDiscovery 3
lower link arm replacement

Just been to garage and it was sugested I replace the lower link arm as a complete assembly,arm ,bushes,ball joint in order to eliminate a knocking coming from front suspension on bumps at low speed.Arm assembly is about £100 and labour a said 3 hours.Any thoughts Question

Had to have mine done a couple of weeks ago. Lower rear suspension bush was worn causing a knocking. They replace the arms because it's almost impossible to remove the bushes. Even the arms on mine had to be sawn off Shocked

Costs quoted seem about right. Don't forget you'll need a full wheel alignment done as well - check to see if the labour quoted includes that as well Thumbs Up

Hi Skyerover and Albourneboy, my rear Upper Control Arm bushes are on the way out as is the beautifully named Adjustable transverse toe link. This is only available as a replacement and cannot be re-bushed.
I've had a look at the Polybush site and though bushes are now available for the LR3 they are horrendously expensive! See later.
So apart from the difficulty of undoing the bolts and a saw being the preferred option, surely it is possible to cut the bolt and not the arm? I haven't done mine yet and I defer to others with practical experience here. I can fully understand dealers and specialists going down the cut the arm route as labour is pricey and a mechanics time is valuable, as he/she could be working on someone else's car after yours if the job can be done quickly and efficiently.
So the first question, is it just getting the arm out or is it an impossible job pressing out the old bushes and pressing the new ones in? Back to Polybush, is £299 + vat for the complete car kit, incidentally that is £100 up on the D2 complete car kit, worthwhile for feel and long life?
As the rear suspension is adjustable in almost every plane, it obviously necessary to do a complete 4 wheel alignment.
Is this a dealer only job or is it within the specialists grasp? I know that most specialists have never had to do this sort of thing before, solid axles are much easier to maintain in this respect. Has anybody had experience of 4 wheel alignment?

Hi skyerover,
To the best of my knowledge, only a few people have tried Polybushes.

Someone in Ireland (ChrisTyler?) is very pleased with them, while others say that they are too harsh.

These are the hardest, Red Polybushes BTW.

Polybush may be working on a softer set, but I don't know if they are available yet.

The rear upper arms can be rebushed no problem, as can the the lowers.
The front lowers can also be rebushed, but if you are paying someone to do it, the fronts are cheaper to renew the arm. The rears work out cheaper to rebush.

polybush

Can you just replace the normal rubber bushes as they go with polybushes,or do you have to do the whole vehicle at one go.Was thinking of buying the polybush set as was said they cant be bought seperatly and use them as and when.Or is this a hair brain idea Shocked

If you're doing polybushes, I'd suggest doing the whole front together or the whole back together, but ideally all together otherwise I think you may have some interesting ride characteristics if you only do some of them......

As long as whoever does it puts it in tight tolerance mode & has 4 wheel alignment equipment, then anyone can do it. If unsure, just ask the question: how do you put it in tight tolerance mode? 8)
