low speed downshift on an 8 speed

now to start ive got to say ive never really been am auto gearbox fan so i may be overly critical

I notice that when slowing to just before a stop i sometimes feel a very slight dull thud from what feels like the gearbox dropping into first gear and often feel that the change from 1st to second is more noticeable than it should be . i dont recall this when i had a 6 speed MY 10.

usual or unusual what you think ? and is this something that a gearbox flush would help

only got 25K on the clock so cant be a wear thing i wouldnt think

Probably needs driving a bit more! Seriously though, the 8 speed is smooth generally, but I have know the odd lurch, especially at low speeds.

It’s always possible to confuse the electronics. They adapt to your driving style, but if you do something slightly out of the ordinary, it may get caught in the wrong gear. I wouldn’t worry.

Going out on a limb here Whistle and I'm most definitely in the minority but I used to find the 6 speed gearbox on my D3 a more relaxed drive.

MY D4 with it's 8 speed gearbox coupled with the bigger engine would leave my D3 far behind in a drag race, but big 4x4's with the aerodynamics of a large house brick are vehicles for leisurely cruising and off roading IMHO, not boy racing. And it wasn't like my D3 was slow, I just found the 6 speed more relaxing at lower speed Thumbs Up

it definately seems to prefer a more aggressive driving style and i would say that i preferred the 6 speed box i find the 8 speed too change down happy for my personal liking.

might get it flushed at its next service just for the peace of mind

thanks for the feedback guys Thumbs Up

The thing i don't like about my 8 speed is the fact that it seems to use 2nd to set off. Occasionally (usually at the same junction) i approach an uphill junction turn in and my speed is too low for 2nd so it feels like its labouring, so give it a bit more boot and it drops to first and takes off like a scalded cat!! My old 6 speed used to drop into first on the junction and accelerate smoothly away
Have started manually selecting 1st going round the junction now Thumbs Up

The only thing a 6 speed has over an 8 speed is its got a proper gear lever, progress Evil or Very Mad
The California stop bump, it is called this because apparently they don't stop at junctions in California just slow down, is a software issue not mechanical.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Software update? There were reports of this on the very similar 8speeds used in bmws and a software update fixed it

What's GAP? To be fair, the 8 speed selector in the BMWs is far more intuitive. Nudge forward/back rather than spinning the dial. Retrofit, anyone?
