Low coolant warning.

Is the only coolant level sensor on the 2012 3.0 D4 the float sensor in the tank, or is there another sensor which I need to consider which would give a low coolant warning?

Background:-

Had the belts done on my D4 a couple of weeks ago. Whilst removing one of the tensioners, the dealer sheared a tensioner mounting bolt off so had to lift the engine slightly to access and drill out. Part of this process involved draining the coolant. When the dealer returned the car, he said that there may be some air left in the system which they could not bleed, so the level in the expansion tank might drop and give a low coolant warning. If it did, I was to top up and see whether that cured the fault.
The next day the error was displayed, I topped up the tank and all was well.

On Saturday I was going London along the M1. I joined the M1 from some services on a short slip road and had to accelerate hard to reach traffic speed. At this point the low coolant warning came on.

There were no other issues, temperature noted as normal. I pulled in to the next services and switched off. The coolant bottle was showing a level about ½” above maximum. There were no unusual ‘hot’ smells from the engine compartment.

I restarted the engine and the warning did not reappear.

I left my car overnight at a friends house and on Sunday morning I picked it up. I checked the coolant level before starting and with a cold engine. The level was at the same point it has been since I topped it up as advised. It was still approximately ½” above maximum.

Driving around town, a short run along the M25, no problems. Stopped for about 3 ½ hours at a museum before re-joining the M25. Still no problem.

However, on the M1, engine under load, the low coolant warning came on again. Pulled in to the services and switched off for about 10 minutes, restarted and the warning was still there, coolant level as before, about ½” above maximum.

Drove it home carefully, no abnormal temperatures. At home parked it on the drive and called Land Rover Assistance. They arranged to call on me this morning at work.

Started the car this morning and no coolant level warning. Got to work, no problems.

LRA attended and could not recreate the fault.

Done my timing and had to loose some coolant and had exactly the same issue

Ensure expansion tank has coolant start the car cold and turn your heaters to max heat then rev the car and hold it at about 3,000 rpm for 45 seconds then let it idle for a minute then same again then check the small bleed pipe at the front of the engine v , unclip it and hold it up when you undo the screw slightly to let any air out
Keep a check on your coolant level whilst doing this and leave the cap off the expansion tank from the start not forgetting to put it back on when done

It solved it for me hope it helps

Thanks Dazz, car is at end of LR warranty so I'm going to let them do it. Just wanted to be sure that there were no other causes I should consider. have read through the other posts which suggest the same, but need to make sure I have covered all the bases.

Not sure if D4 are the same but is your oil pump the newer one with the extra web for strength

this has been an issue too and the float gets impregnated so it doesn’t float correctly

New coolant bottle fixed it.
