Loud Wheel Squeal
Hi,
My rear offside wheel has suddenly started making a very loud squealing noise. if i brake quite sharply it doesnt make any differance. If i apply handbrake and go backwards in low range then drive away with handbrake off it dissapears for a couple of minutes then returns.
Any ideas what i need to do? i can take disc off and look at handbrake setup but will then need some parts maybe so better to get the parts first if someone has had this problem before and knows what i might need to get before i do the job.
Regards

I cant remember the thread, but I think I have seen comments about stones getting stuck between the brake shields and the discs. Have a look around the forum re that maybe. Good luck.Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

I have had this a couple of times where the EPB falls apart and a bit of wire scrapes against the disc. If you don't sort it ASAP it will ruin the disc.VIN: A175A328***

Thanks for the replies, i had the discs replaced about 2 months ago.
I can check for stones using a mirror maybe, but i think it will be something inside the drum, just a hunch but worth checking for stones.
If the HB has fallen apart what would i need to put it back together??

New Handbrake shoes
Suggest you buy new shoes and springs on a use/return if your local place will allow that (?).
Pull the discs off and take a look.
You may get away with a clean, but as stated ^^, it sounds like new shoes are required.
If you look at Bodsy's Brake manual, it explains the setup very well, and you'll have an idea from the photos what to expect.
It's not a difficult job, and a good chance to clean calipers/ copperslip the pads, grease the guide pins etc. Do both sides.2011 MY D4 HSE

I’ve just had what sounds like the same problem....I already had a rebuild kit in garage waiting for something to break.
This was what was broken on mine.SMN500012...the spring had lost its springiness and was making contact with the hub, resulting in that horrible noise😉Discovery 4 HSE SDV6

I have the same most times I go off road, sometimes it’s cured by putting a hose pipe in the gap behind the disc but infront of the guard and washing the dirt out.
The last time I had to take the disc off and clean and adjust it for the noise to go away.
Will be dirt stuck in the rear disc either at the pad at the bottom or inside.BT Gap IID

I recently had new discs and pads and had a horrendous squealing noise after, turns out not enough copper grease was applied.

My Cousin had something similar, squeeling and grinding from front wheel on lock.
Turned out to be very worn wheel bearing and bottom ball joint shot.. This allowed the disc to rub the backplate.1955 SWB Series 1 86 inch
