Looking for a cheap Offroader ...Advice Please

After getting an earbashing from the mrs for scratching the front and rear bumpers, and (she says) causing the current fault with the D3 by offroading it, I am looking to spend £1000 to £3000 on something to batter about in.

I think the RR classic is a bit wide, probably looking at Old Discovery or Defender.

Can anyone tell me THE engine to go for, I have seen a couple of very tidy D1 petrol V8 s going really cheap, but know nothing about the engines.

Whats the difference between 200tdi and 300tdi?

Are the gearboxes / engines pretty reliable

Which is bestter manual or auto?

I have been warned to look at sils and boot floors as well as leaky alpine windows, anything else? , all advice is very much appreciated Very Happy

Just keep using the D3 Rolling Eyes ...save the £1000-3000 and use that to have the paintwork \ wheels touched up when you are ready to trade Very Happy

Ask over on landrovernet.com - there's loads of people on there running around in the kind of kit you've described

I'd go for DGs suggestion, save whatever you'd spend on something else for tarting up the D3 later. Another motor will mean more insurance, road tax etc

I've tried the 2 LR's route, my S3 just sat there and rotted once I got the D3

Get rid of the Mrs Shocked , we have 2.5 kids, that could be sooooooo much more expensive than £3k Laughing

I know what you guys are saying, but the other thing is I am in the bulding trade and am also looking for a second works vehicle to drive from job to job while my lads have the work van. The Mrs tends to use the D3 through the week for school, shopping etc and its mine at evenings and weekends.

I thought something like a defender / D1 would suit my offroading hobby, plus I could pretty much throw any tools and materials in the back without worrying about hurting anything!!

If its a work horse you want then get a 110 you may need to spend a bit more that you want to for a decent one.

Or do what DG says.
In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

I have a nice litte 1963 series 2a which has even been used to rescue the D3 in the past. £1500 would get you great one but watch out for the chassis though.
Better yet at that age it is tax exempt so you do not have to pay that robin b'astard in number 11 one penny Thumbs Up

The two G4 replicas at last weekends gathering at Boughrood solved the problem by having tyres considerably wider (by a factor of 2) than the bodywork Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

What DG says, but if you do have to get another vehicle, remember this is likely to increase SWMBO's claim over the D3 as "her" car as she'll always point to the rotting heap of former LR glory in the drive and tell you "that's yours". Loads of cheap D1s with 200tdi lumps available for your budget, many already kitted out for offroad use with better tyres, winches etc.

Last month one of the LR mags did a summary of 90 vs 110 vs D1 for offroading and the D1 did very well indeed, bar the tendency to rip the front valance off, which is why every offroader you see has no front valance and an ARB or similar winch bumper. It's often been said that a 100" wheelbase is the perfect LR and lo, that's what the D1 has.
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

If you only intend to use the 2nd LR as a toy, I'd go for a 300tdi engine in a 90.
A disco 300tdi is too small and you have to lift/cut the vehicle to get to a standard 90 Rolling Eyes

BTDT, switched the 300tdi disco for a Def 90 TD5 8)
