How to lock Disco with the upper Tailgate left open

Noticed a few posts on this recently, but never thought twice until sat on the beach and Max my dog too hot and bothered. The car was parked only a few yards behind us, so thought I'd give it a go, worked really well and so here's how to do it.

The below instructions are for a Discover 3 - no idea if the process will work for a Disco 4, but it does look the same

Remember though from a security point of view, people can still climb in through the open tailgate, I have a K9 dog crate, which can't be openened when lower tailgate is closed and locked, but I would still not leave the car unattended or out of sight Thumbs Up

Firstly, unlock Disco and open upper tailgate.

Taking a screwdriver (or similar), position it as in the below photo in the lower tailgate lock:
Screwdriver in place and lower tailgate lock is in 'Open Position'

Push the screw driver inwards and you will notice that the lower tailgate lock will move with the screwdriver, keep pushing until you hear a click as the lower tailgate locks in place:

Once the above is done, lock the car using your keyfob. The car will now be locked, all doors and lower tailgate will not open. As you now have the upper tailgate open I strongly suggest you double lock the car so it will disarm the internal sensors

You will now not be able to open the lower tailgate or even close the upper tailgate, here's a view of uppertailgate, showing the gap you'll have (remember not to try and slam the upper tailgate shut Laughing ):

Remember Your car is now unsecured and anybody can climb inside through the rear tailgate

How to unlock the lower tailgate
Firstly, you'll need to unlock the car using key-fob and actually as you're unlocking the tailgate you will need to 'double click' the unlock button.

Using lower tailgate button will not open it!

To be perfectly honest here, on the beach a few weeks ago, I had a little panic moment as Max was inside the car, rear tailgate open and I couldn't open the lower tailgate!

I then remembered I had to unlock the car twice Rolling Eyes But that still didn't work Big Cry Then I remembered (I know I am getting old though!) that when you you normally open the tailgate, you use the switch on the upper tailgate Rolling Eyes Rolling with laughter

Doing this means that you can then unlock the lower tailgate lock:

Once you do this, the lower tailgate lock will return to the 'open' position:

And that's how you do it, hope this helps Thumbs Up

I've got a vent lock, so I can leave my tailgate open 6" with alarm on and use remote for locking whilst dog gets plenty of air. Without anybody being able to open the tailgate. They are also available in shorter and longer lengths.

Thanks for that

Useful tip...I have had to park with lengths of wood in the D3 that extended through the tailgate...
 BREXIT - done properly.

Didn't work with my D4 as it senses the tailgate is open & you get the double pip sound when you try to lock it. I guess the sensor that operates the interior light is telling the ECU the tailgate is not shut properly.

I lock the car then use the landrover button on key fob to open tailgate, then much lower tailgate lock in this keeps everything else locked

Tried this today and it doesn't work completely on my D4.

Lock car, press boot release button on key fob and can open top tailgate - all OK. Then press button on lower tailgate and it opens too meaning that door can be opened on pooches cage and pooches pinched!

Plus side is that all 4 passenger doors remain locked though.
