Location data stripped from images |
|
Hello all,
Just a quick note to let you know that as of today, all images uploaded to the gallery will be stripped of their EXIF data. This data can contain information such as the GPS location where a photo was taken.
All images currently in the gallery have also been processed to remove this sensitive information. 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Excellent idea Martin as most people may not be aware that you can extract this 'hidden' information from photographs

Is this all EXIF data that will be stripped or just geo-location data? I only ask because all my photos have full copyright notices and rights usage data embedded into them. I used this data last year when an online broker decided he would use some of my images taken from here and used in his adverts without my permission but I was able to prove ownership of the images from the EXIF data and invoice him for using them. Cheers Ian

Ian,
It would seem I have royally stuffed up as I have removed all EXIF data (on advice) without realising the use of it to embed copyright. 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

It may be OK as I have just checked one of my images in the gallery and at least the copyright part of the EXIF data is still there which is OK, it looks like it has stripped some of the IPTC data out but not all of it Cheers Ian

Good move MArtin
It should be a standard thing to uploaded images, opt - in for GPS data, saw a bit of a news article on this last week, and how people were using the info to stalk etc very 'on the ball'
Hairy Dan, I'm impressed,
1. You knew that EXIF existed
2. You took the effort to copyright your photos
3. You realised somebody else was using your photos
4. You took them to task on it, I hope you charged him £1000 each!

You only have to demonstrate that you are the owner in an ultimate sense .....so even if they stole a copy of your photo from your gallery and it didn't have embedded copyright ....then you could still prove that it's your's from the original 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Ian,
Thanks for checking, I've also looked and it appears that copyright data is stored separately to EXIF and so has NOT been removed. 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

WINDSWEPTISLANDER, being a retired professional photographer I know a little bit about about photos and copyright I charged him a lot more that it would have been if he had asked about using the photos first
DG, yes I know that but it is amazing how quickly some people will admit to stealing images and cough up when you show them the embedded EXIF info Cheers Ian

No worries DG and for the record I do think it's a good idea stripping the geo location details from photos, a lot of people don't realise what you can tell from a photo Cheers Ian

Just a gentle nudge to remind folks that this only applies to pictures hosted on this site, not external photo storage. You'll need to check your local settings on your phone/camera and/or the file storage site to be certain you aren't sharing your location when posting pics.
I can still hear their screams........ I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

A few pics might have a few "THIS IMAGE HAS BEEN DELETED OR MOVED" banners. Well maybe more than a few.
Now going to upload via the site.

If you want to view, edit, manipulate or remove EXIF or similar data Exif Pilot, which is free, is worth looking at:-
