It does seem that the early cars, especially the auto's like mine are thirsty. I don't know why, but the evidence is on this site.
There are also early manuals which achieve very good economy.
I borrowed an 06 manual recently, and it was very slow, and just as thirsty as my auto. This makes me think that it is probably a driver thing. I admit I drive too aggresively, and I think this is why I get hammered for consumption.

mine was really smooth an quiet.....even the LRA guy commented on how it was much smoother than his ......then I had the updates and now it sounds like a tractor in comparison.
I am mid 'issue' with my dealer over a large number of ongoing faults we are going in circles trying to fix, mpg is one.........I defy anyone to get my vehicle to achieve the published figures for mpg for the auto. I also have quite loud transmission rumble type noise, so suspect some inefficiency in the drivetrain stuff, butt he dealers ignoring the issue at the moment..... can see it ending with solicitors 2004 TDV6 HSE Auto Zambezi Silver

50k miles and the engine is still smooth and quiet.
In fact, the whole car is remarkably taught and rattle free, considering that it has seen a fair bit of off-road action too. Much better than the D2 which rattled like a bag of spanners after 50k.

Did a 250 mile trip in S TDV6 Auto, got 31.2 mpg (actual rather than trip which read 32.3) sitting at 60 all the way. Was better on cruise, mpg went down when tried to hold that speed manually. I know 60 is boring but there was no point in me arriving earler as England were playing some S American team or other. On way back did not want to ruin the figures. Day to day wife gets 23.5 (actual) with lots of short trips, I get 25.8 (actual) with mix of Mway & town stuff. Both engines less than 2200 miles so should loosen up & improve (I hope).

Have been looking around dealers. Demo cars that I have pressed the mpg button all show between 25-26mpg. Pobably various averages.

I know the onboard comp can be a bit "vague", but on my 06 model, it started off at 22/23 around town (and this was from last dec), so pre-heater would have been on (along with seat heaters and everything else to keep me warm), and as I've put some miles on (now at approx 15k), its got slowly better. OK most of my mileage is motorway thrashes, but even then, its still showing 28mpg. I did have to take it easy to get the 35 it showed during the week, but thats not the first time I've done a steady trip and seen mpg in the low 30's.
But....put the caravan on the back and whey hey 20mpg! I'm sure the mpg was never quite so different on my TD5. I used to get 27 out of that, with around 23 towing.
From what I've seen, no 2 TDV6's are the same in performance or economy (or faults and issues), so its almost not worth trying to compare. Unique I think is the word I'm looking for.

I've now reached the end of that tankful, the final tally being:
Computer 29.3mpg
trip 539.6
range 36 (but from past experienbce this probably means about 15)
Took 82.92ltr to refill at same pump (meaning about 2ltr left in tank = consistant with about 15miles range left)
thus the true consumption = 29.6mpg
This being normal mixed use, about 10 miles offroad, 25% minor roads & the rest A road.
... more than happy with that Long succession of Disco's since 2001...
SIII Lightweight - neglected & rusting. Bulkhead, A panels, vent panel & outriggers now disintegrated - Next years project!
