I suggest that you get the hoses from forum sponsor BAS:-

Poo.

It's not the hoses then. It seems that there is a leak around the intake manifold. It's hard to tell but it seems either a cracked intake, plugs or block. Some evidence of soot.

Thoughts?

Loads of air is coming through this hole of throttle. I can see soot on the engine cover and the surrounding areas.

What's under there? Could something just have got loose at some point?

Can you see a crack or split in the manifold itself?

no. I will use some washing up liquid tomorrow and see what it throws up. There is a bold in that hole. I removed it, checked the rubber washer and its all looking good. Its clean as well, which seems to suggest that the leak is coming from somewhere else on the manifold.

If its a cracked manifold, any ideas on cost? I hope I am not looking at thousands again!

Use human-friendly soap or car shampoo as washing-up liquid is full of stuff that you do not want on your car or engine. With blown leaks regular water would do and where possible try to keep clear of the electrics.

Thumbs Up

Okay - quick update. Pouring a bit of soapy water over the area, it now seems that the air flow is not coming from the top at all. It seems to be pushing through the side of the foam packing so its either side of the manifold (ie split) or its just a high pressure stream coming from the turbo valve underneath.

Confirmed.

Manifold has cracked. It seems that there is a huge amount of pressure there. The mechanic believes that the breather pipe might be blocked, hence the crack. He is suggesting changing the breather assembly too and see if that sorts out the issue. He is not really sure what would have been the root cause.

He tells me that the pressure is so high that you could see it pushing everything out.

Very strange.

Ok.

I have the car back. It was confirmed that the issue was with a damaged/ cracked far side intake manifold. The garage could not understand how such damage would have been caused, apart from the possibility that the vents may have been blocked and the damage caused by high boost pressures.

Anyway, it took about 8 hours to remove all the bits, check the injectors, change various gaskets and breather pipes and reassemble. It's now running beautifully and some of the 'pinking' I used to get is all gone.

I think this had been slowly getting worse for some time.

This piece was broken from somewhere within the manifold. Again, hard to tell where from.

Oh, whist there, I had timed climate enabled.

Great service from this small indipendant garage. I also had their rather charming freelancer 1 whist they worked on the car. Thumbs Up

Oh, cost - about 800 notes and change. Big Cry

Another thing, the intake was pretty grotty with oily muck. Not sure if that's right.

Unfortunately the intake is force-fed oily muck, so it is to be expected.
