All the lights on.....But won't start
So, the D4 started as normal and drove 10 miles to work.
Came out mid afternoon, ignition lights up as normal, foot on the brake , press starter and.....NOWT
Just nowt.
No noises, clicks, bongs.......Nothing.
Did the usual, lock car, leave for a while but still the same......did this a lot(!)
Even disconnected the battery and did a hard reset.
Battery seems fine.
Rotary gear knob stays retracted.
the only dash message I'm now getting is 'Camera system fault'.........cameras work fine BTW
AA guy came out and poked and prodded for half an hour (even put in a new key battery) but still the same.
He concluded it was a duff starter motor
On reading here about a broken earth strap, I tried to use jump leads from battery negative to the engine, but could only really find the (I assume) lifting point at the front of the engine but nothing, not even trying to start! - am I doing this correctly(?)
Vehicle is still in the work car park and I'll need to get it recovered pretty soon
Its a 2016 D4, 67500miles, new battery last year, no other faults.
Any advice appreciated on possible fixes or places in South Liverpool / Widnes / Warrington to get it fixed - THANKS2000 D2 TD5 - big red tractor no longer with us

Hi
Congrats on the 1,000 posts
Must confess don’t know much about the D4 but would first double check to see what ur battery voltages are using a multimeter, apologises as not sure if u have 2 x batteries fitted
Would also get the codes read as a starting point
Hope this may help a little and fingers crossed is an easy repair

Just another 70,000 to go and you’ve caught Del!
The lights being on point towards a broken connection somewhere, the second battery is just for the the start stop system so wouldn’t affect the car starting. Definitely try to find an earth point and use your jump leads as the earth strap failure is surprisingly common.
Happy hunting I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Trying to find a good earth point is WAY trickier than I would have guessed possible…….. it’s all just plastic and pipes!!!!!!!

Same symptoms as mine and it was the earth strap behind the front offside wheel arch. Was only connected by a thread. £6 to fix and took 40mins which included taking the wheel arch liner out and back in.
I'd try using a jump lead from the negative on the battery to one of the chassis/body earth points listed by Gstuart. If that starts it, then i'd have a look behind the wheel arch liner for the strap there. It was difficult to see without taking the liner out though. Once removed, it's blatantly obvious because if that is the cause it'll be corroded and green and crumbly and detached.
Hope that helps.

Hi jamez79
Funny enough have the same earth strap on my D3 , found some pics when I done mine , know what u mean with it being hidden behind the wheel arch liner
On mine also found the earth battery strap connection behind the fuse box, other earth points are hidden behind the passenger side liner , know there used for the suspensions compressor and ECM , other ground points behind the drivers side headlight
Alas not sure how they compare , but wished to at least share in case there useful

Thanks for the additional help.👍
Cos’ the car is in busy work car park, doing work on the car is difficult.
Is taking the passenger side wheel arch liner an easy job…… any instructions????2000 D2 TD5 - big red tractor no longer with us

Always a team effort
I assume you would remove the drivers side first seeing the large earth cable is that side
Personally when I’ve removed wheel arch liners I’ve taken the wheel off and then using some clip removal tools to remove the plastic clips, remove the headlights as there is a torx bolt, the wheel arch also needs to come off and there’s a small panel at the base towards the rear of the wheel arch
Just thought know there is an easy accessible earth point by the fuel burner heater , enclosed a picture for u
U can remove the plastic clips with a screwdriver and some long nose pliers, I just found these easier
As it’s been sitting have u rechecked the battery voltages with a multimeter plewse to ensure its hasn’t dropped very low
Hope u get on ok

no ........AA dude didn't 'plug in' to read the codes so don't know I'm afraid
I don't have the opportunity to muck around with the car in the work car park so I'm in two minds.......
a) Recovery to home to poke and prod if its a quick(ish) fix
b) Recovery to a garage and let them deal with it
with option b) - I have no idea what garage though!!2000 D2 TD5 - big red tractor no longer with us
