Light off-roading in South Wales

As per the other thread, I did some off-roading this morning:

1) Roman Road from Trecastle to LLandovery (starts here)
2) SN7732-02 / SN7623-03 (starts here)
3) SN7326-02 (possibly my favourite) (starts here)
4) Brechfa forest.

Massive faux-pas in the latter Embarassed . Went up a hill, turned round and came back down and on the way saw some papers nailed to a tree - a prohibition order. Signage wasn't brilliant and it wasn't on TW2 (it will be soon!) or the council rights-of-way map. Have 'fessed up to the council's PROW department in the hope they can improve the signage so others don't make the same (genuine) mistake.

Tried to do Dunlop Hill but it has been closed. The ford near Brechfa was a raging torrent (I half expected to see Katherine Hepburn and John Wayne go past on a raft), so that was a no-no.

A few videos below. They are 'warts and all', i.e., you can see me making a pratt of myself, stopping so I can take photos and making navigational errors. Just skip through them! Embarassed Make your own judgement about 'scratchiness' but several were very scratchy. Jacked up the suspension by 35 mm using the EasyLift once or twice. Cameraman was "Mr Gimbal".

Navigation based on TW2 (worth the money for GLASS membership alone), converted to What3Words to get the start-point accurately placed, navigated to using Google Maps and, once on the lane, using the OS Maps app.

Photos here. A couple of them can be clicked-on and then navigated using the mouse (they are the ones with circular arrows at the top-right).

I think these are actually 'mid-Wales'. I need to do the lanes described in the first post of the original thread (and Strata Florida re-opens in five weeks!). Claerwen reservoir is also on my wish-list. Wink

All-in-all, about 130 miles by the time I got home, bringing a 'Transmission Fault' warning with me (hopefully just hot oil). Didn't see any other 4x4s - just a dog-walker, a couple of cyclists and a farmer (with whom I exchanged a friendly wave). My route took me past Puff's gaff.

So, a RRS on a Disco forum? My wife wouldn't let her D4 near a green lane after I got her D2 dirty Laughing .

Anyway, an enjoyable day out without a puncture or massive mechanical breakdown. Next time, I need some other people to come with me - if only to help with the gates! Laughing

Was the latter in Brechfa?

Wasn't aware Dunlop is closed Sad Who by?

The Roman road is up the road from my Father's place.

Never taken the V8 along it but I have ridden it the other way on my cross bike. This was a few years back and I thought the approach from the Llandovery end was a little overgrown (beyond the gate at the end)

Yes, the TW2 ref is SN5328-02.

[The access to] Dunlop Hill may have been a temporary thing. I followed a road-sweeper from Pontynyswen to Brechfa at 0.001 mph. There were a few of them out and about. No doubt some cyclist had complained about gravel on the road. Rolling Eyes Only one way to find out - we should try it!

Ah - don't know that one.

TW2 has a recent comment for Dunlop from 5/9/20, so guess it is open ok

In that case, they must have (very sensibly) put a sign there while they did the road sweeping. Poor timing on my part, then.

Fancy giving Dunlop Hill a go one evening?

Sure, why not, though my car is clanking like a good'un at the moment Rolling with laughter

Up Dunlop & back down to Nant-Y-Fin, then back up the one of the UCRs in my direction?

Clanking? I think creaking and moaning might top that.

Yep. Just say when...

I might have to go back into Brechfa Forest to look for the magnetic mount for my CB aerial. There is probably someone somewhere looking at it stuck to their car, sweating that it is a magnetic land-mine.
