I haven’t gotten to the point of thinking of weight in kgs, that’s a step too far. And far, far too scary. Whistle Whistle

Another diversion driven by idiocy.

What's going to happen when the champions of this subject find out the roots of imperial units are firmly based upon germanic \ Roman systems. Whistle

Typical drill pipe size in US is 6-5/8” diameter by 10m long.
Keeps the young engineers thinking.

Maybe an age thing but use and prefer the imperial system, we went through decimalisation at school and all the (old) penny sweets doubled in price overnight.

I too do the litres to gallons calc at every fill up and convert distances and volumes constantly. Drives the kids mad.

I can hack both, but I don’t like km for some reason although I know exactly what they are equal to imperial wise.

Likewise, I am always converting kilos to stone and pounds and litres to pints and gallons. Sometimes I will equate prices to half a crown or a sixpenny and remember a three penny bit with glee.

I don’t suppose I’ll ever get out of that habit.

At 57 I still think in feet and inches pounds and stones. The younger members of my immediate family all think in mm, cm, m and grams and kg’s though. Which says all we need to know.

The world needs to adopt one universal system, but until rose tinted glasses are banned that may not happen. At least in my lifetime.

Try explaining to a foreigner that a hundred weight cwt is not a hundred pounds but 112 lbs.

Then there is the short ton, imperial ton and tonne

Distances in miles depends where you are. A Swedish mile is a lot further than a UK mile

In Nepal, ask about walking time/distance I have been told 3 cigarettes before now. As a non smoker meant nothing to me.

I can work in both systems and use the most appropriate measurement.

Similar at 56 - my brain is wired to imperial measures - but I'm fine with metric too as required.

Armed with just very small number of conversion numbers Metric / Imperial interchangeability is dead easy

2.2 pounds to the kilo
25.4 millimetres to the inch
454 grams to the pound
568 millilitres to the pint
1609 metres to the mile

There are two other factors to consider wuth imperial measures which makes them easy to use

1. The values in common use are often only single or double digit
2. The names of the units are almost exclusively single syllable

Compare inch/feet, ounce and pound versus centimetre/metre, milligrams and grams

IMHO

And anyway - who buys TV's or tyre's WITHOUT using Imperial, even in Metricland-Europe

So to my mind, in a polar opposite position to LT, the world DOES NOT need to settle on one system
We don't with money, do we?

I do cycling, running and DIY in metric but driving I do in imperial. It would be a lot easier if we just went metric.
