Lenny the D3
So just thought I’d say hi to everyone and introduce my D3, new to the D3 platform have owned 2 x 300tdi discovery’s and 1 td5 before.
This post is going to be mainly rambling and asking for help
So I’ve just bought a 2007 Discovery 3 HSE, colour code and pictures to follow,
It was rather cheap listed for £2350 (bartered to bring price down) with 135,000 miles on and seems to have decent history with about £3500 spent on it in the last 4 years.
Previous work done:
- compressor and air tank
- prop shaft
- gearbox flush and filter
- wheel bearing
- Brake discs
- new wind screen
- AT tyres
- aux belt and tensioner
Issue when bought:
When driving ABS sounded like it was kicking in, then at a certain speed all lights would come up on dash (HDC,ABS,Suspension system, AFS) with it saying transmission fault, I had no sport mode at any point and the car would lower down on suspension and not allow and special programs.
I have now changed the gear selector UCB500072 and have gained the sport mode and manual gear control, but the problem persists I have done a hard reset and the problem went away but now even after a hard reset it still shows all the time without driving. I have also replaced the brake light pedal switch and no improvement. Also the radio comes up with "low power mode shutting down" seems like I’ve got a lot of electrical gremlins but finding them is troublesome.
So I’m kind of asking where to look next? I have taken the passenger side door trim up to check cables but so far have not found any breaks

So just to clarify the name "Lenny" has been given by my partner who found it most funny… Lenny the Landry
So yesterday I replaced the gear shift module and this is what I had found, a corroded pin that had snapped off into the plug, after taking the plug apart I could un-pin the plug and work the small metal pin that was stuck, gave it a clean out and refitted the new module was a fairly easy

And then today with a fresh mind and a few hours searching this forum last night, I had come across the problem of the TCM behind the battery getting water ingress, and much to my surprise I found that someone had already been in the area, finding electrical tape and plugs left hanging. Removed the unit and instantly noticed the water, took the unit indoors to get the mrs thin nail file (she wasn't happy )
Started the clean the contacts as soon as I made light contact with the middle plug the pin gave up and fell over, so I think I’ve found my problem. Will get the part on order and update when I get a chance

Welcome to the mad house and empty wallet brigade!
Lenny works well. All our cars have names. My wife called my new Defender Noddy because she thought it was a Noddy car that was impractical with its tiny boot and annoying rear door and grossly over priced for a D5 with a bodykit!
Anyway, what you don't realise is that with all the dash board lighting up like a Christmas Tree is that Lenny is just getting in the Christmas spirit

some of what you are describing has been known to be cause by the steering angle sensor being out of adjustment. Easy to calibrate with the Gap. Mine was 18 degrees out and when I would make a hard left the stability system would activate the right rear brake.
And welcome to our nightmare. I call mine "Ginsu" because I will fix one problem and the Rover say "but wait there's more!"

Seems like I need to borrow my mates snap on diagnostics to check!

New part has arrived today and it seems from the date codes the one fitted was manufactured in 2004 so must have been replaced by a previous owner as the new one is date coded 2019 with I assume the seller must have had an issue and bought one from Land Rover!

Those are some messed up pins on those modules-it'll seem miraculous!
When I retreived the Rescue Rover one of my problems was that it defaulted to "off road", and would not respond to the voise of reason. I ended up cleaning 16 years worth of coffee and soda out of the height switch, cleaned some of the pins and did some resolder.
What we seem to be finding is that we can start with neglected and decrepit machines and bring them back. These LR3's are robustly built and respond to our efforts. Mostly. On good days.

It seems like they are fairly hardy creatures but with a bit of extra TLC they come back to life!

So today was a good day, fitted the new module and that cleared all faults went for a drive and they all came back so plugged in the diagnostics and read ABS live data and rear right would get to about 27mph then stop reading and lights would flash up so fitted new abs sensor and seems to be all good other than EPB warning light which I can’t get rid of! Error code that comes up is C1A48-01 - warning lamp circuit, signal lamp connection failure- general electrical failure which I think is wiring as I don’t have any problems with the EPB it functions fine!
The said ABS sensor which I think has been damaged since before previous owner done wheel bearing.

Still have a lot of other issues to sort but I just want that last one fixed so it can go in for MOT and I can use the damn thing

Was going to say I have diagnostics if you get stuck but looking at the later posts it's clear you already do. Here's hoping you get it on the road soon.

So even better day today found the fault was on the cabling at the rear two plugs and was a split and corroded cable! So next week I’m goint to be prepared and get my soldering iron and heatshrink to tidy up my temp repair and the “specialist" garages terrible previous repair.
