leds again

Yesterday I fitted a set of U38020R S & T leds from Ultraleds & was well impressed until I took it for a run last night & as soon as I touched the brake pedal the cd was drowned out by static. Further checks showed that when on a weak radio station static was coming through, but as soon as I turned off the lights it stopped. Also, bands of interference were running horizontally on the Tv screen when the lights were on, and an electrical hum was coming out of both the n/s and o/s light assembly. I know a lot of folks here have installed them trouble free so I wonder why mine are having such an effect. Anyway, I've contacted Ultraleds & they've offered me a refund.

That's exactly the trouble I'm having - what model of radio do you have? I've got the base model single CDunit - I wonder if they just affect that model? It's a shame 'cos they look great!

I'm wondering if there's a problem with just one of the LEDs, causing interference. I'm waiting for an email back from Ultraleds.

Helpful reply from Ultraleds:

"we have never had any problems with these bulbs causing radio interference theres nothing in them apart from a resistor that could cause this"

Hmmm Confused

I don't think that's quite right. Their own website states for these bulbs have:
Ultraleds wrote:
Power Driver Built in to give a constant Ultrabright Light. From 12 -16V these bulbs cannot be overpowered (unless more than 16V applied)

This implies there's a voltage regulator in there, and this could be the cause of your interference.

Yes, there's definitely more than just a resistor in them - it maybe the voltage regulator but i read some of these LED lamps have the brightness controlled by Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) so I think that could be a cause of the interference too. Odd that it affects some vehicles and not others.

Almost certainly it is a switched mode affair which is indeed PWM. This could mean that those cars producing slightly lower average volts at the alternators may see less interference effect than those cars with a higher output. Did you get through a lot of ordinary bulbs before the switch to LED?
In current outside temperatures my alternator only hits 14.5V for a few seconds before dropping back to it's usual 13.5V.

It used a couple of normal bulbs but not too bad. I'll check if it has the interference whilst the engine's off, which may show if it's a voltage problem?

Just to add to the confusion, I replaced my front sidelights with tower leds from my local accessory shop, & there was no interference problem with them, it was only when I fitted the rear ones from Ultraled that I got the problem. I was also getting an electrical humming sound from both the o/side & n/side of the rear sets when the sidelights were on. I've now sent them back for a refund, so Ultaled can now confirm they have had problems with them.

Do any other companies make something similar to the Ultraled 20 LED version? I'll be returning mine soon if I can't pin it down to 1 faulty LED, but I don't want to go back to normal bulbs if I can help it.

hello, ridgeback, just out of interest, do yours make an electrical hum when they're on?
