Rolling with laughter

Genius!

Told you Rob, you got the grumpy tester when you had your MOT done.
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

LEDS

Well; having passed the MOT at an independent a couple of weeks ago with my ULTRALEDS xenon white mini light tower sidelight and numberplate lamps installed (see above) the motor went to Lookers Land Rover Chelmsford today for a service.

Had a phone call from Lookers this morning telling me that I had illegal lights installed (wrong colour)! They even marked this under the comment section on the service sheet.

Anyone looking at the light that these LEDS produce would agree that they are white (not blue) - after Rob's experience above and mine today I can only conclude that main dealers must only be employing staff that are colourblind!

UK construction & use reg broadly state..
Front lighting - any colour other than red
Rear lighting - red only (excluding indicators and reversing lights of course!)
If the MoT tester is interpreting these incorrectly, they are at fault, not you - of course, the lamps need to have the E11 stamp on them....

Just thinking about doing the Stop / Tail lights in LED's....Looked at Ultraleds site and they have 2 versions available, the U38020R and U38002W, the W being a white LED and the R a red one. Problem the R version is twice the lumins of the W version.

Not sure what to get as the old saying goes "be seen", but will the R's be too bright ?

Anybody know or have fitted either version of these LED's please post your findings / views.

Hi Paul

The U38020R is the part number of the ones I have in mine - they're fine and you'll be well pleased with them. If you are a new ULTRALEDS customer, use the code DISCOVER10 to get 10% discount (it can only be used twice). You'll need 2 pairs

I fitted my Ultraleds rear stop and tail LED lights last night and they look great. As the LED bulbs consist of 20 individual LEDS, the light reflectors make it look like there are hundreds of LEDs in there - it looks really smart. I'll try to get some pics soon, but you have to see them 'in the flesh' to really appreciate. Not TOO bright either, but clearer than the filament bulbs the replaced and will hopefully last longer too. And being LEDs they light up instantly, so give the person following more warning. Highly recommended mod, for about 36 quid. Very Happy

I ordered and recieved the stop/tail LEDs and they are great. Really show up better.

I also ordered the mini tower bulbs for the sidelights......I havent fitted these yet due to the crap weather but I have a couple fo questions.

1. How do you lift the headlight locking tab without smashing your knuckles or having to resort to using a screwdriver to lift the tab?
2. Do the LED's replace the side light bulb or the turning light bulb? The side one looks a lot smaller than the LED one supplied?

Kev

Kev,

I used a pair of pliers to lift my tabs. Just gently hold the tab and lift up - saves the knuckles and finger nails.

Kev - in answer to Number 1

Use a double length of string under the tab. lots of leverage and lots of room.

Cheers for the tips on Number 1.

While trying to lift them by fingers alone the wife stood behind me giving her usual spirit lifting advice,

' dont scratch the paint' Confused

' mind you dont break that off' Shocked

' I know you, you'll lose you temper in a minute and something will get broken' Mad

(under my breath) yes dear... you're bloody neck if you keep on with the advice'. Evil or Very Mad Censored

Kev, if you've got the 9 led sidelights have a look at the 'shoulder' on the back, mine were quite square and a really tight fit for the bulb holder ( the previous 5 led ones were rounded) I had to give them a real shove to get them into the holder and succeeded in pushing the contact out the back of the holder as I did so, I put it all back together, switched on, stood back to admire and.... nothing Crying or Very sad Also as the leds are smaller than the 5 led type make sure you push the holder far enough forward into the headlight unit to reveal all the leds, I managed to have one half illuminating behind the headlight Big Cry My 'I know what I'm doing feeling' had gone by then!
