Last week...
... I spent 2 days curing a knocking noise from a Disco 3
Both inner bushes on both rear upper arms, rear ARB bushes, front ARB bushes and a lower ball joint...
The ARB bushes, and the ball joint. A couple hours work at most...
The upper arm bushes...

NOT FUN
That was pictures of the drivers side. The pass. side was even more fun because the compressor gets in the way of the front bolt
The rear bolts were seized inside the bush, and you cant get in to heat/cut the bolts out, and there is no room to move a spanner in that tiny gap. And when the bolt that goes through the upper bush in the hub seizes, just give up... Had to cut through the bolt and bush to remove them, then knock up a tool to push the new bush in...
Were absolutely ed though. The bushes had totally split from the outer casing which they are bonded too, resulting in a knocking noise and some wayward straight line steering. What makes it even worse was the car only had 38k on the clock
All done now though, never doing another set again

Thanks Mike for the info and photo's...
My disco was at the dealers last week for a normal service and I asked them to take another look at the front suspension for the usual knocking noise as it's still under warranty.
They told me they knew all about this issue which effects many D3's and RRS's on their books. They acknowledged the problem but asked me to bear with it for a little while longer as they have been promised an approved fix from Land Rover. They couldn't tell me how long this would take to come through (weeks or months) but assured me there would be a fix and that they would do it soon as... etc etc.
Could be expensive early fix for Tata if it's every D3 RRS sold so far?2005 D3 HSE 2011 D4 Landmark 2016 D4 HSE Lux

Interesting article on Ford's (including LR's) warranty costs here
It's clear that warranty funding is set-up outside of profit margin and appears robust enough to deal with recalls on a global scale. It is good to see that Jag\LR's warranty table is progressively reducing even if it does stand around 4.2% of revenue.
...more startling is that Tata Motors have a warranty table of 0.7% of revenue...one of the lowest in the industry ...could their reliability rub off onto LR ? 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

The car was only 2 years old. 38-39k miles on the clock and still under warranty.
Was just really put up so if anyone has been fobbed with with "we cant fault your knocking noise" to have a look at those bushes too, as well as lower ball joints and ARB bushes. And what to expect if they decide to take the job on themselves

But remember what is the most expensive part of this business - the labour costs - and where are most of Tata's labour....
Though to be fair their vehicles also cost next to nothing to stamp out for the same reason so its not a black and white picture Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Seems to be quite a common thing on high mileage cars, and ones used off road frequently
