Large oil leak in the rear of the engine. |
|
Greetings to all, I am new in the forum. I hope you can help me.
I have a 2013 D4 SDV4. After changing the right valve cover (For the common problem of breaking). It started with a large oil leak in the rear engine. It comes from above the bellhousing and descends on BOTH sides of it.
I add them after changing the valve cover, the engine stayed started in idle for a long time (about 45 minutes) accelerating it and maintaining it several times at 2000-2500 rpm and no oil leaked. The leak was seen until after he walked on the street in a very short distance.
The valve cover gasket was checked and it is well installed and there is no oil leakage.
Thanks for any help.

Is it oil or could it be the oily mess that escapes if the air intakes are not properly connected? Look at the connection above the fan. .

Thanks for answering.
All air intakes are checked, and the connection above the fan. Unfortunately everything is ok.
For it to run on BOTH sides of the bellhousing, it has to come from the V (between the two heads) where the high pressure pump, the oil separator and the oil filter / cooler are.
Greetings.

Common fault where the oil cooler fails/leaks and oil fills the v and rolls out the back. You will need to replace the oil cooler/filter housing and seals between the cooler and the block. It's not a simple job by any means so if you're not experienced in DIY, I suggest paying someone to resolve it.

Hi,
I got the same issue and also pour oil on the front.
Thought it was the öil pump cracked but then I saw the oil in rear as well.
Anyone with a picture or overview so I know what to check?
Thanks.

Just had this problem!
My indie explained that it could be the oil cooler, but he replaced the oil filter & seal, and we hope it’s done the trick.
He jet washed the “V” afterwards as best he could, but it’s taking a couple of weeks at least to see if the problem’s been resolved. Oil from the V collects in the under tray, and takes quite a while to stop dripping.
It can make a real mess on your drive! I’m a Disco 4 believer. What a vehicle!

Hi all,
I recently had the same problem. It cames slowly at first, showing oil traces in the coolant bottle, then making huge leaks under the car.
I replaced the oil cooler, the oil separator and his two seals and the coolant manifold.
As I needed to remove 4 front glow plugs, I take profit to remove all of them to fit some copper grease on.
The removing and replacing of the oil cooler assembly is pretty tricky but not really complicated.
The best video for that is here : https://youtube.com/shorts/exT6mzB4Cfg?si=DxBUZjo-AoS_7kSX
All that took me about 6 hours, oil change and coolant refill/bleeding included. The longest job was to clean every parts and especially all admission parts full of tar from the EGRs...
I can give any advice if needed.
Good luck.

Well, changing the oil filter & seal hasn’t worked. So it looks like a lot of further exploration is needed. My Indie thinks it is the oil cooler and/ or associated seals, pipes etc, particularly as I lost a little coolant.
The leak is from both sides of the bell housing just as described, and I’m paying my Indie to sort it. I’ll report back here once it’s done….. I’m a Disco 4 believer. What a vehicle!

Will be happy to read your return... And how much it is to do the job in a garage !
Just to know how much I've spared. For information, I paid €258 for parts (list above).

Hi Icarus,
I have the same issue (hense how I found your post!) and just wondering how you got on? did your indy sort it and was it the oil cooler in the end?
my indy immediately said oil cooler when I explained the symptoms over the phone and from reading on here I see why. very common problem by the looks of it.
I am gauging whether to tackle myself (i am fairly experienced on the spanners) or throw it at an indie and save myself the trouble.
From what I gather so far its just tricky and fiddly, rather than technical which I dont mind. I usually hand over the more technical or bespoke jobs as its a different kettle of fish doing it on your driveway without full ramps & a full workshop around you if things start misbehaving.
Anyway, interested to hear how you got on, or indeed from anyone else who has tackled it.
Cheers

Hi all.
Well, my “Oil Leak” has been sorted finally by my Indie.
Turns out that the oil filter seal had a slight leak, which led to an accumulation of oil in the V.
That seal was replaced, and the oil leak seemed to have stopped but a leak continued.
It turned out to be the water outlet which was leaking coolant into the V, which was then mixing with the oil residue from the filter seal leak left in the V, and dripping down either side of the bell housing.
My Indie put a new water outlet on and problem solved. He charged me about £120.00, which was super reasonable, but I’ve been a customer of his for nearly 25years, and watched and supported his growing his business. He’s a good guy. 👍👏👏😃 I’m a Disco 4 believer. What a vehicle!
