Large oil leak!

I have quite aserious oil leak from the engine - cant see
where it is coming from but is dripping on the drive and has coated the
underside of the car. The undertray is wet with oil along the rear edge and the
chassis members are too.

Any idea what it could be? Are there any known weak points that can cause a
leak like this?

Its definately engine oil.

I have the car at Rogers of Bedford now as the leak was very bad (oil
pooling under the car!)

It seems that although there was no real evidence of it at the top of the
engine, it is indeed coming from the area around the oil filter. The sealing
ring was replaced and everything cleaned up, but it is still pouring oil out
from somewhere.

The problem is that is too difficult to see where it is
coming from due to the 'birds nest' of wires, pipes etc. They think the oil
cooler may be split, but until they can get to it to check it they wont know
for sure. They have a probe camera and TV but can't see much with it to
confirm where the oil is coming from.

It is running out of the back of the V between the cylinder banks, down the
back of the engine and over the bell housing on both sides, then it covers
everything under the car right to the back (and the back window!). It is
literally dripping from the under-trays.

The level in the sump has dropped by a litre+, so there is a lot of oil coming out from somewhere!

Rogers estimated that if I had been driving on the motorway the oil light would
have come on and then the engine would probably have seized quite soon after
as the leak is so bad.

The steering oil level is fine.

There is no contamination of the water header tank and the engine runs fine - no noises
etc..and plenty of power.

Is there anywhere else in that area that it could be coming from in such
quantities?

I would get it to the dealer because if the oil disapears they could blame you. Shocked

He said it is at Rogers in Bedford already, I am guessing that is a dealer.

Wasn't being sarcastic, I was guessing it was a dealer and not a mate called Roger Thumbs Up .

Hope it gets fixed and under warranty

Got the D3 back on Saturday

The source of the oil leak was the oil cooler / fuel cooler / oil filter housing that sits between the cylinder banks on top of the engine.

This is an cast alloy housing made up of several components. Mine had warped - you could see the deformation with you eyes - no need for a straight edge.

This let oil under pressure past the gasket and into the valley between the cylinder banks, which then ran to the back of the engine, over the bell housing and covered the underside of the car - and my drive!

The really bad news is that to replace it (the part is only around £100) you have to remove three injectors, one rocker cover, move the front belt housing forward and obviously remove everything from on top of the engine - all wiring, pipes and other gubbins. This takes hours...so the cost mounts!

I was sort of lucky...I have the AA insurance, but it only covers £37.60 plus vat per hour labour! I dont think any garage charges that now days. I have to pay the difference, but at least all the rest of the bill was covered. However, I have to pay the bill and claim it back - so we will see how well that works!

Hope no-one else has this problem and wonder if this is a common problem?

The new houssing seemed to be a bit more robust in construction...

Hello All..
have the similiar problem, from right front side big oil leakage all under the car.
oil is blond so probably niot engine oil.
any idea where this could come from?
my car is left wheel, and oil is on the right side. some pics...
very likely to come from the white plastic box.
can I drive more 30km to the garage with it?

I would guess that to be diesel ? you should smell it as diesel

Other blond/yellow oil

brake fluid
Auto gearbox (left side)

EDIT
To me it starts high up near brake hoses, so I would check the brake tank to see if it's low.
and top up before driving to a garage. and take some with you
