Are Land Rovers expensive to run?
Looking at the threads on this forum it strikes me that there's alot of technical issues with the D3, and I dont know if now I'm not being put off the whole idea of owning one. Is LR ownership going to be expensive, and outside the means of the normal person?

Just do your research (ie, hours on here and wherever else), find a car that suits, buy it and enjoy.
Mine has cost me less to run (parts/servicing) than my wife's VW Polo.
25mpg is a killer if you're doing a few miles but then it weighs 2.75 tonnes so it's never going to be economical.
What will cost you is adding all the goodies because once you start there is no end of great man toys to put on
Very few people come on any forum and post about how their car is great and never breaks down, however, a forum is often the first port of call for anyone with a problem as it's probably the best place to receive unbiased and FREE advice.
Good luck and hello.

As with any marque forum, they tend to be a focus for people with issues and therefore can offer a slightly distorted view that the motor is nothing but trouble. Many owners have a trouble free time but don't report that here in the same way.
Expensive to run ? Depends what you are used to TBH...it's a big technical motor but there's nothing I've seen or heard of that should scare the pants off you Do your homework, buy one and start enjoying it before you curl your toes up I say 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I'm on my second one and not really had any problems at all apart from a wheel bearing at about 80K miles (wear & tear?) and a couple of very minor niggles.
All in all (IMHO) a brilliant car and great to drive.
To be honest, if you look at any of the car forums, you get the impression of a lot of problems with the cars that are the subject of that forum, after all it's where people go to air their grievances or ask for advise.
Just consider - not many people got on to forums like these just to say how good their cars are.
Me - I just like the banter Clive

Thanks all so far, I suppose it what I guessed... you only hear of complaints and never the good times... We'd be looking at an auto so it's the fuel economy that worries me. I also appreciate that the D3 is a complex vehicle so there's more to go wrong. But I'd much rather buy British (yes, really) as I beleive in supporting British jobs; our current car is a Honda CR-V (no sniggling at the back please) built - I hope - in Swindon.
Anyway, five replies in half an hour on a Thursday afternoon - aren't we supposed to be working or are there more important things in life?

My 05 plate has had alot of the usual woes but its also a very hard worker.
Parcels, pallets, dogs, stag do's etc.
Each time I get mad with it (and you will) i think what else can;
Carry a shed load of gear,
The whole family + Dog plus kit,
Tow a caravan,
Look smart when visiting customers etc,
Keep going when we get in excess of 3mm of snow and Ice,
Put a grin on my face even tho its ruining me.
Irreplaceable im afraid.
Now stop measuring every penny and go and get one with a good warranty and you will be fine!!
Enjoy.
And welcome to the dark side.
All things shipping, storage, transport. UK and worldwide.
aren't we supposed to be working or are there more important things in life?
yes... A D3...
I think the posters above have said it all really
If you are looking for outstanding fuel economy then a 2.7 ton vehicle is not for you. If you are looking for a well designed, extremely capable vehicle then you are looking in the right place. There is a lot of info on here about issues but also fixes.
There are also a few good threads that give excellent advice on what to look for when choosing a D3 - search for those and take the advice and you should be able to purchase a vehicle that will give you peace of mind The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Car prior to my D3 was a Merc C class 2.6 petrol auto
Similar MPG and servicing costs, but as bland as beige and depreciated like a lead weight.
Loved my D3 and love my D4

I am not wealthy and run a D3, mind you saying that I was wealthy before I bought it
Seriously I don't think they are that expensive to run, parts are actually quite reasonable, especially from TLO.
expensive . !!! Well what isnt , life is , my wife is , the kids are , my bike is, but that's what I work for , mine has not broken down , it's great and yes we should praise it , buy as expensive as you you can afford , les hassle then , and it's worth every penny ,every bit of diesel I put in , it just goes, does not complain , and does what you ask it , I had a merc before , nothing but costly , so buy one . 2008 ,hse, it does what it says .

I am not going to add much to this post other than agree with what's been said. We use our 05 manual for a range of duties including towing the caravan. I had a td5 110 before the D3 and it is costing no more to run that that. So far 100% reliable. I have also has a P38 in the past and you can rest assured it's nothing like that!!
I use a local independent specialist for maintenance, I don't have a warranty and wouldnt bother on the basis of experience so far. As for economy, I live in a hilly part of the country and local sub 10 mile trips I get around 21 Mpg. On a motorway run it's up to 28 to 30 mpg. Just on our way home from a 1000 mile towing trip to Cornwall and I reckon 21 mpg overall.
So in short they are a great car and nothing about them should concern you. Look for worn bushes some clutch issues on the manual but aside from that go for it.
