Any Land Rover Mechanic’s Answer a question?

Good Evening,

I have a 2016 Discovery 4 SDV6, three weeks ago it went into Main Dealer and they have found metal swarf in the oil filter. They have said it is probably early signs of bearing failure and may result in a major engine component failing. They suggested I return it to the supplying LR main dealer I bought it from three months ago. It went back and they have confirmed swarf in the filter but have then said that metal fragments are normal and would be found in every engine over 60k. Everyone I speak to says this is wrong but they are adamant that “some metal” is perfectly normal and no cause for concern. They have also told me that Jaguar LandRover will confirm this as well.

What do you think?

Thanks.

If there so convinced it’s “normal “
Get them to put it all in writing and from jlr too.
Then should your engine go bang I would think it would put you in good stead for a claim?
Just my thoughts Thumbs Up

I’ve asked them for that from Jlr already, they are looking to get it for me apparently. They are also running compression tests but they came back normal. As far as I’m aware a bearing braking down does not effect compression.

Someone’s going to say it but of course it’s normal, that’s why so many engines pack up. Whistle Whistle

Metal fragments are not normal. Not in the engine oil pan, not in the transmission pan nor in the differentials or transfer case Whistle Whistle Whistle

Ask them to show you a oil filter that has just been removed for an oil change and show you the metal shards in it, shouldn't be a problem as they are theoretically doing oil changes every day.
It isn't compression they want to check it's oil pressure.

I’ve asked for a full refund or a new crated engine. It is being tested at the moment to see if it passes the jlr requirements for replacement. I’ve had it three months and done 1500 miles. What I don’t understand is why jlr are going to pay out when the car is 6 years old and out of manufacturers warranty. It has an approved used warranty but I believe that is not jlr backed.

If metal fragments are “normal” then does that mean they add them at the factory when the cars are built? Whistle

Having been through this scenario ! The engine needs replacing no doubt.
You just wont get a new 'crated engine ' they're are none however the reworked lumps are as good as new and remanufactured to a very high standard .
They will pay out because its there problem to sort ,nobody expects to lose an engine at that age and they have big issues with it ,so much so the insurers wont pick up the tab. If they try to offer a part payment ,I wouldnt accept as there are so many cases were they have picked up the full cost . Mine was done at nearly 6yrs and 67k FOC
To be honest for what its worth now the original service dealership should have dealt with this and this should be raised with JLR. They sound like they were giving you good advice rather than the one you bought it from . Dont expect it to be quick as most dealers have a line of them waiting to be done mine was 10weeks and no courtesy vehicle.

Thanks for all the reply’s

Luckily I have a car from the sales team, I am aware they are not brand new but as good as with a two year warranty. They have said if the engine replacement is authorised it will take 3 weeks.

In all this I cannot believe that jlr that have no financial interest in a 6 year old car will want to pay out
When the supplying dealer is liable along with the warranty as I have only had it three months.

Everyone one I have spoke to have said metal in the oil filter is bad news except them.

I suppose the only option if they try to force the return with out fixing it is to formally reject the car as not fit for purpose but I imagine they will give me a low ball offer to buy back the car.
