Off up to the lakes for a week over Christmas and looking for a good route I could do in the D3?
Got quite a bit of off reading experience but not in my own car that i obviously don't want to damage.
Can anyone recommend some good tracks with some good views?

The Old Coach Road tends to be a favourite, though not driven it for a few years.
I believe there was some dodgy 'pot hole' since then but don't know the condition of the route now.
Starts in Matterdale and runs over to St John's in the Vale....... always on the road less travelled 🚧

There was quite a lot of wash-out when we did the Old Coach Road last....but the view of Blencathra is worth it....

Don't think side steps will be a problem on that route.
Though it's not the best accessory for off roading.
They have been known to bend up, thus not being able to open doors.
Never have been a fan of them myself....... always on the road less travelled 🚧
Thanks ronp, doesn't get used for off reading ever as we are posted down in Suffolk looking forward to having some fun in it & getting some good photo.
Told the muses just to get me a full tank of fuel for Christmas & I'll be happy up there

Last time on The Old Coach Road.
Seem to remember Flack had side steps on and not a problem. You'll be fine in the D3 but if possible get someone else to tag along, always best to have a second vehicle.

Coach road is not hard. For a first time it's very easy, I would see if someone can take a 2nd disco along.
Always best to go with someone else in case you get Into trouble or such.In loving memory of FA54WSK.

Done the Old Coach Road twice, the first time last November when it had rained for weeks (as in the photo from Andy), plenty of company. The second time did it this summer when it had been dry for several weeks but there was still some water about, no problems with side steps but some steep gulleys whereby you have to choose your line carefully. Some repairs have been done by local farmer I suppose. It is about 5 miles from outside of Dougray to Threlfell area if you go from East to West.

As has already been said the Old Coach Road is a nice easy lane but I wouldn't advise doing it alone. The lane tends to hold a lot of water and the infamous hole was filled in a couple of years ago. I would advise going from Matterdale End to Threlkeld as it is easier going down the washed out bits instead of up them
