Where to begin? Firstly, welcome to the Forum!
As to your knocking, this could be (deep breath time) ... anti-roll bar bushes, bottom ball joint, top ball joint, steering rack track rod, track rod end, lower wishbone bushes ... I could go on!
A common issue, I'm afraid, especially as the car ages - try searching for '+front +knocking', get a cup of coffee, and enjoy!Regards,

Start with new set of lower wishbones as bushes are easier to swap out when integral 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

quick tip, turn the steering wheel left and right, can you hear a knocking noise from both sides, if so its yer steering rack tie rods
If the knock is from one side, then its possibly yer steering rack which is expensive
lastly, BEFORE YOU TRY AND SECOND GUESS AND BEFORE YOU'VE SPENT ANY MONEY from descriptions on this forum, please, please take it to yer LR or Inde LR dealer to be diagnosed....simples
