After 3 weeks of torture I cracked it - thanks to this site
Knocking noise from rear absolutley doing my head in - tried every seat permutation possible, crawled around underneath, blamed wife and kids for spraining seat mechanisms
Started playing around with lower hatch - drove around with it open - searched site, found similar problem - wrapped locking spigot with insulating tape - knocking gone - will get proper fix done in next few days
Thanks everyone - great site Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.

Jacob, I think it's the round bar on the rear tailgate that the latch on the top section engages on to - i'd post a photo, but it's a long walk to the car park and back...

Jacob
Sorry - it is the round bar that the lower tailgate locks on to
Hope you solve your problem
Thanks
