I was of the understanding that the oil type filters allow more air to give the better performance so let in more of the gritty stuff too so probably at the cost of the engine I believe.

The K&N part number for disco3 is 33 2333. £39 incl vat.
I have only had a very short drive with it in and not really noticed any difference. I'll what happens to the fuel usage!2005 TDV6 HSE, Dual battery (TFC) with 1000w inverter,

That is only after removing the dirt with the cleaner though right?? That is what you used to have to do else how do you end up with a cleaned filter? Soaking/removing the dirt then drying and re-oiling was the thing 20yrs ago, can't see how it will have changed unless you want to leave all the accumulated oil/dirt o the filter???Cheers

Yep, thier website still quotes "washable and reuseable" so you need to allow for the full maintenance cycle, not just spraying more oil on....Cheers

I have been messing with some K & N filters ( as i use them on diesel engines at work) ...
They do a 57i induction kit for the D3 which means removing the whole air box.
Quite expensive piece of kit ,so i thought i would try my own.
With the exception of a heat sheild ( and removal of the lower air box here it is )
Just doing some testing to see which size i should be using ...
The 2 bigger ones will need the bottom of the air box removing ( 1 screw holding it in place on mine)
Unfortunatly it does not give that nice roar that it does on a petrol engine.
Also i think i would revert back to the original air box and filter for off roading as i have seen the amount of dust in there !!!G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

I spend a lot of time in the Mojave Desert, I have found that driving in a very dusty environment, the oiled filters get covered in dust very quickly and will have to be cleaned every two weeks (in my case).
It is just not worth the extra effort. The oil is like a magnet to dust and just clogs too fast. At least with a paper filter I can shake out the dust when on the trail.
If you drive on paved roads it is a big advantage.
If you drive on dirt roads it is a big dis-advantage.

I agree with this,but where you drive also counts. In very low pollution and dust areas such as here,the K&N filter(just bought $87 plus post) will show an improvement in air intake and performance.
In the State Capital with it's trucks and heaps of diesel smoke,I would put the paper one back on.
When we commuted 70 miles a day on those roads the paper filter was black and sticky .. even on the
inside after 10k miles !

Can report .... no difference in fuel consumption over clean paper filter.......
BUT the acceleration has improved ( ...and I am not dreaming )
