Kevlar underbody protection? |
|
Was at a local dealers the other day, where they had preped a D3 for a trans-Africa trip. Mostly lights, a sad excuse of a reversing camera system, a water tank where the spare goes and most importantly I had a peak at what they told me were kevlar protective panels, both for the sump, gearbox and interestingly for the lower a-arms
I've googled a while to find D3 kevlar parts but nothing came up (they were a perfect fit), so was wondering if anyone has come across them?
I doubt it was custom made here... ==> Guide - Inexpensive AV Modification

If they are in Kevlar, think of it as a 6/7 time more expensive alternative to aluminm.
similar element for Defedner are quite impressive : super light and sturdy.
That is nice and all but on a 3 tons beast I doubt it is as justifyed as on a rally car / Bowler really.
any pics by any chance ? l=Oo\________/oO=l l:Ool======loO:l

I'm not the expert here, but I always thought kevlar is strong in terms of rigidity...but isn't it very brittle as well...? So if it takes a knock it will simply shatter unlike alloy which will dent...? The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Don't they make bullet-proof vests from kevlar? Should be quite rigid to withstand a bullet and stop it, maybe to do with how many layers are used?
I did imagine it would be hideously expensive (no pictures as my phone was in the other car with SWMBO coming to collect me ), but I if one is to do some serious off-roading and is concerned about weight (given the likelihood of carrying jerry cans, spare wheels etc as well), could it justify the cost ==> Guide - Inexpensive AV Modification

actually you are right...I was getting confused with carbon fibre...

isn't kevlar normally a second impact material - ie really strong the first time then the resin breaks up allowing the fibers to move the second time so it's not nearly as strong? 56 HSE

Kevlar is only Rigid ONCE, think of it as a product thats woven, abit like fibreglass....Once its splinters then its FOOKED, and very weak.
MOD Helmets and Vests are/were made of Kevlar, once damaged they are thrown away in theatre, in peacetime and training are kept.

Probably because if you were stupid enough to hit the fronts, you must be plain thick to do the same on the rears
Did'nt know they made these, and don't understand what protection they give, but look a great area to collect the mud
