Remember John its all on pc link now and you or any mot centre can pull out a test history on your car from the VOSA database so your failure items will be recorded, and if they look at that prior to test they may have an extra hard look! I would suggest taking it to an MOT centre that does not undertake work as you always get a totally unbiased opinion without feeling they are hunting for that few hours extra work. I am not sure but dont LR operate the reduced labour rates for vehicles over so many years old? Like BMW do etc.

Does anyone know a good LR specialist (who is up to dealing with a D3) in the East Midlands? I don't fancy getting butt-fudged by $trat$tone come MOT day.

Independents - recommendations Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire good/bad/indifferent

Check out your local ambulance depot or local authority depot.
I usually have my cars MOT'd at our local ambulance service centre as they do do some private work including MOT's. Not used them for the D3 yet but when my next MOT is due I will.
Always fair and unbiased I find. No interest in getting themselves extra work repairing things that don't need fixing.

Hunters in Derby are historically (not histerically ) fair on MoT tests, also bear in mind that testers will generally err on the side of caution, failure of lower ball joints (or any suspension component or mount) can cause damage and injuries even at low speeds...
The prices quoted seem a little strange, ask for the LR repair times for each item, even if the dealer is rounding to the next hour they should be able to aggregate the times

JT Another alternative is to take it to the local large bus operator or BT Fleet depot, all are MOT centres, regards the work, found an excellent ILR set up here in Bristol, £65 per hour, although Yeovil will charge approx that for us disco3 people if you speak to nick nicely

Another point is mot testers often chalk items that fail so if you want a second test elsewhere check the ball joints have not been chalked up.

Makes it even worse if they are recording irrelevant items - eg his brake fluid, they can't know whether his brake fluid has been changed or not and can't test for it and AFAIK it isn't an MoT-relevant item.... Cheers

Were these 'advisories' issued by the mot tester, and recorded on the fail (or pass) sheet? or were they dealer 'advisories' which they spotted whilst generally prepping the vehicle for the MOT?
I would think that there is no requirement to prove to the tester that you have changed the brake fluid in accordance with manufacturers recommended service interval. So long as the brakes work to spec then it should be fine. Same scenario as the question I posed in another thread regarding Valeo wipers displaying a 'Change Now' warning, even though they work ok.
I reckon the dealer is pointing out the fact to try and get some work.

Gareth, I don't doubt it for a moment but to even call these items advisories in the context of an MoT test is IMHO out of order scaremongering by the dealer, many punters would have the advisory work carried out asap on the basis that an MoT advisory can quickly turn into an MoT fail item.....which patently high coolant level and brake fluid age can't..... LR have introduced a VHC (Vehicle Health Check) program to all dealers.
Vehicles should be inspected for any additional work that may look like it's needed...Customer can then deem whether to ok the work
You will find most visits should generate a check list.. TLO has left the building.......

So where's the best place for an MOT???
LR Dealer or Independant?
My view had always been - use the dealer, as it is they who know and look after the vehicle.
They MOT'd it last year with no issue [but it was going out of warranty a week later].
After reading some of the above posts, now I'm not so sure.
At the end of the day all I want is my vehicle tested correctly and to be safe in the knowledge that it's roadworthy and not requiring additional work.
Oh.... and I don't want to be ripped off!! ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Looking at the paper work they are as 'The Large One' correctly states listed on a separate sheet and not on the MOT failure notice.
When presented with the findings at the service desk this was not made clear at all, just a big shopping list presented with attached prices.
Well latest updates; the screen is being replaced as I type, I dare not watch
Bloke seem A1 though
The Ball Joints are scheduled in for replacement at my next door neighbours company next week, £18 each and £126 to fit.
Drive shaft boots to be inspected and re sealed.
Bulb replaced by yours truly see I’m not completely useless !
Brake fluid, oil leak and coolant levels to be assessed and acted on accordingly.
So anyway gave ratstones a call to re book it in for a re test to be told as I had not had the work carried out by themselves it would be a full MOT charge of £58.
Imagine my delight when I pointed out to them that it was a re test within 10 Days and that was the incorrect cost
So they have begrudgingly accepted that it will be £25 for the retest, I could labour the point that i only paid £25 the first time round but what the heck I don't bear a grudge........not much
The other point was also that I was seriously considering trading in against a brand new Defender XS that I had been jumping in and out of all afternoon when I had the original test.....
This regrettably is no longer the case...
Thanks to everyone who has contributed with their thoughts, it's just a shame that it has to get to this stage where the customer feels he is being ripped off and vows never ever to enter their door again.

As loads of D3s approach MOT requirement, why don't we organise a DISCO3.CO.UK Co-operative and issue our own advisory notice about what CAN commonly go wrong, average and best prices for repair, and what HAS NO RELEVANCE in the MOT - to be read by members and handed to the MOT station/dealer?
I started the thought process considering negotiating a Group price for MOTs but I can't see a way this can be done. (Unless TFC starts a peripatetic service )
