Just Cleaned the Rad and Intercooler........
Noticed a distinct lack of power and had the fan on most of the time at Boughrood..thought i better ask TFC for some advise.
Blocked radiator and intercooler was the diagnosis.
I have only done 3 events off road now and the build up of sh te on the above items was unbelievable!
Luckily as thse events have happened within the last month or so, simply removing the grill and putting a light pressure hose through it has done the trick...was not as baked on as Bobbycripboxes!.
Test drive this afternoon and all the poke was back again and the fan never cut in once.
So for an hours work i would honestly say do this as routine clean up maintenance after every event.
It will probably save a total front end off scenario that Bobby was faced with last week."you cannot teach stupid people to do clever things"

checked mine and its caked with mud ... will try the following tomorrow
remove mantec plate and front grille
raise front of car and place on axle stands
fix a hose on a stand with a gentle spray nozzle
apply for some hours in sections along intercooler and rad
... wait to see if it shifts the mud
hope it works as I don't fancy a front-end off jobby

I've just come back in from doing mine. Nice mix of mud & pine needles!
Thought I'd do it sooner rather than let it all harden.
Gentle application of variable pressure lance cleared most, with just the grill off. Mantec comes off when I've got more time.Long succession of Disco's since 2001...
SIII Lightweight - neglected & rusting. Bulkhead, A panels, vent panel & outriggers now disintegrated - Next years project!

Having said that, after having the grill and lights off, it didnt look like to much work to get the bumper off so you can have better access to both the rad and intercooler?
I set a remote device up...(hose taped to back of a boat on trailer)...moved trailer into position and off in doors to read the sunday papers
Re positioned hose a few times, and 2 hours later done.
Maybe someone can advise re bumper removal "you cannot teach stupid people to do clever things"

Bumper removal is a little more involved, you have to partially remove the front wheel arches to get access to some of the bumper fixings.

Ill leave that as a job for TFC then if required "you cannot teach stupid people to do clever things"

I should have emphasised 'a little more involved' - I've done it twice, and if I can do it anyone can.

Just a thought - to save having to take the whole lot to bits every time, what about a two stage process, first give the intercooler a good soaking in clean water, then after a few hours try the hose on it - I used to use this on my old 110 and it worked far better than just hitting it with a hose ofr hours on end.Rob Smith

Can't quite see how to 'immerse' the intercooler unless I drive it into the local duck-pond
It's outside the Crown & Crooked Billet pub but even so I don't think the locals would be amused

Well the local ducks might have something to say about that, but it might work
I just sprayed as much water ONTO the intercooler and rad as possible, let it soak a bit, sprayed some more the left it to do its thing. The idea being to get as much water into the mud as possible to soften it before having a go with the more serious hose. It didn't save any time, but less effort was involved (first found this one when lunch was served half way through cleaning the rad & intercooler so I left it soggy wet and came back to it half an hour later and the bulk of the mud fell out with minimal effort)Rob Smith

This will work fine with the rad but you cant get to view the whole intercooler, just the cooling fins just above the tow hook.
If its really caked....whole lot out i think is the only option. "you cannot teach stupid people to do clever things"

Second that request.
Anyone? Please... D3 XS Manual - gone
I am led to believe that it is possible to just pop the front of the wheelarches off to free up either end of the bumper cover - not tried it myselfSteve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)
