This is my first post on here, so first things first, Hello all! Very Happy

The oil on an ITG panel filter is very sticky, and will not migrate through the filter to contaminate the MAF. Other brands use a light oil, which could become airbourne.

ITG filter down to about 5 microns, where as a K&N will only filter to 25 microns, hence allowing 'large' particles through, which can contaminate the MAF, and also cause potential engine damage. K&N is great on a tarmac race track with an engine that gets rebuilt every season!

Pleated cotton gauze filters (K&N, Green, etc) have a very thin surface area, and so blind quickly. These actually become more efficient (in terms of filtration) as they blind, but obviously you will lose velocity/flow and so their effectiveness deteriorates rapidly.

A layered foam filter (ITG, Pipercross, etc) has several times the retention capacity of the other types, and as was mentioned previously, can still be very effective when very dirty. They can be easily brought back to life, with suitable cleaner and re-application of the correct grade of filter oil.

Another point is that MAF contamination can also occur from oil vapour, from the engines breather. When you shut the (hot) engine down, the residual vapours sit in the air intake pipes, causing a thin film of oil to form.

Regards,

Gary.

This is very true, we have had ITG filters on our last 5 cars and not a single problem. Well recommended.

Hi Danny!

I don't want to hijack this thread, so I'll go and introduce myself in the new members bit. See you there! Wink

very interesting read on the filters

I notice ITG say they can make a filter if its not listed (I have a FL2)

But is there anything in the warranty that says you must use original air filters?

Thumbs Up npinks

I have to agree with 10 on this, but only if your engine is standard factory spec. The benefits of a good performance filter pay dividends with tuned engines.

I noticed that the foam filters tested on this report were only 2 stage? ITG's are three stage filters. Exclamation

I have read a MIRA test report on performance air filters, and know who I trust. Wink
