Just reading the ITV motoring pages and noticed this quote in the test article - actually quite a good read too. Can be found here http://www.itv-motoring.com/launches/land_rover/4283.asp

I noticed the wheels reverse like this on the Fifth Gear test when the fat bearded bloke broke all the rules green laneing and drove like a complete looney over the rough.
Do they actually do this ? If so LR really have thought about how this thing achieves traction when needed.

Simon, the reversing wheels is the differential causing the wheel that is slipping to revolve the other way, until TC gets involved with the difflock.
If you jack up a car and turn say the left wheel the wheel on the same axle will revolve in the opposite direction. If you jack up a 4x4 completely, then turn say the rear n/s wheel, the rear offside will turn in the opposite direction, but the front n/s will turn that way as well with the front o/s turning yet again opposite.
When TC takes over, it causes the wheel with the grip to bite until other wheels bite. If one lets it grip go, then it could reverse rotation momentarily and so it goes on. Not a great invention by LR, just mechanics.

It is possible, it is caused by the differential. If you jack up both wheels on an axle of any car, and spin one of them, the opposite wheel will go in the opposite direction. This is why mere mortal off roaders get stuck when one wheel looses traction.
On the D3, if a wheel (or both wheels) on an axle looses traction, the brake is applied to the spinning wheel, thus transferring the power to wheel that has grip (hopefully).
The wheel spinning backwards is because the wheels have lost grip, and the Traction control has not kicked in on that wheel yet, or both wheels have lost grip and the TC is braking the opposite wheel.
On the D3, the effect is often seen as a wheel that is up in the air, starting and stopping spinning about 2 -3 times a second. This is the TC working and trying to transfer the power to the wheel with grip.
