Is there a simple iPod solution ?
This is yet another thread on iPodding the D3 & for that I apologise, as I know the subject has been done to death already.
However, I am completely bamboozled, so I’m hoping to clear things up here. So I thank you all in advance for your patience as I open yet another thread on iPods, but my sanity is at stake here.
As with many of you, I too want to have an iPod in my D3, I’ve been through all the threads here, I’ve been on the iPod site, the Harman-Kardon site, the Dension site & many many more, but my head is left in a whirl with all the techno stuff, leaving me more confused now than I ever was.
I’m hoping therefore, if I ask a simple question, I might get a simple, clear answer………so here goes……
Is there an in-car adaptor / holder that once mounted in the car, all you need do is slot in the iPod & have it charged, while also giving a audio line out that can be either plugged or hard wired into the Aux input of the LR Stereo.
I don’t need or want any further integration of the iPod. All I want out of the adaptor is a stereo line out & positive / negative wring for charging the iPod.
Does such a simple unit exist & if so can someone please point me in the direction of where I can get one. If not, is there a simple solution for other types of players such as an iRiver or those Creative Mp3 players (can’t think of their name at the moment.)

Hi, In my 90, Ive attatched a lead from ipod headphone jack to aux on the stereo, works just fine, also works on the Denon inside the house, either aux socket or headphone jack will work.
You still have to select playlists etc from the clicker wheel as normal but the volume can be adjusted from the stereo controls as normal.
Most decent stereo outlets sell double male leads, or go to somewhere like maplins and ask them to make you one up, will be done for less than a Fiver !!! headphone jack to headphone jack, no dramas.
If youve got headphone jacks anywhere in the car this system should work from them.

Don't apologise. Can be very confusing!
I like simple solutions.
I have a Creative Zen Xtra mp3 player- one of those hard drive based jobbies about the size of a cigarette pack. It has no dedicated 'plug and play' kind of adaptor- instead it has a simple headphone socket and power plug socket, both on the top of the player.
My simple low-tech solution, which would work for any mp3 player taking a standard headphone (and having a car power adapter that runs off the standard 'lighter' plug in the front dash) was to use CoteFarmBoy's suggestion in http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.ph...+aux+cable thread.
To recap, in simple steps:
1. you get a standard headphone extender cable - get one at least 2m long and cut one end off
2. connect it to the LR wiring in the passenger foot well (behind the bonnet release cable) - see the above post for pictures and instructions. Took me 15 mins.
3. tuck the cable under the trim and feed round to the centre console, with the jack end of the cable left loose ready to plug in to your player.
4. buy a dedicated car power lead for your player, and use a cable tie to hide the excess length if necessary
5. find a nice place to sit your player. I simply sit it in the cup holder next to the gear lever. You can get a tool-free bracket for about £20, which will sit to the side of the stereo fascia
6. just plug in the headphone & power lead
7. select AUX on the stereo
8. Enjoy!

Thanks guys for all your suggestions. I think the power lead / stereo jack lead solution is perhaps the easiest. However am I correct in thinking that there is a volume issue with connecting the headphone output of the player to the aux in of the stereo ??
I was hoping to find somewhere in the deepest recesses of the internet, a nice holder that I could slot the player into, which would also connect to the power / audio port of the player, which is hardwired to power & the aux input of the car. But I’m beginning to think such a device doesn’t exist.
The killing thing is, that I actually have an Mp3 player in-car holder, which has phono out & pos / neg wiring for charging the player. But, I don’t know what type of player it is for. I had originally thought it was for an iPod, but looking at iPods in the shops at the weekend, they all seem too slim to fit in the holder I have. Unfortunately there’s no markings on the holder at all, to indicate the manufacturer. So now I wonder is it for older iPods, weren’t they much thicker in profile than the current ones ???
But at the very least I can go down the charger / aux in route.

There are certainly lots of ipod charger / aux out units available for the ipod which would power the ipod, and give you proper high level output volume. This would be a good example (the audio lead plugs into the small hole on the side of the charger plug).
It may be that you have one for an older model, as yes, the older ipods were "fatter".

Thanks "simkna" that could be a solution alright. Would certainly address the volume issue.
Mmmm, I think the holder I have may be for an older iPod alright. I must check to see if any of my mates have an older iPod I could try for fit. If that works I could try talking them into selling their older iPod, then I'd be sorted..... 8)
I'd second Si's recommendation. I have one, albeit gutted and internally connected, so that just the ipod connector is visible in the centre console. The only drawback of any auxillary audio source is the difference in level between that and the CD/Radio. Why couldn't LR have agreed for HK to provide an aux. volume control on the ICE system? Still, if that's my only grumble, I'm happy Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

One other quick question……
What voltage does an iPod charge at ??
Can you give it the car's raw voltage or do you need to regulate or filter the power feed ??

The iPod needs ~5V (basically USB voltage) - using the Belkin charger/line-out solution is the best low cost solution for iPod in Disco 3/LR3. You can also use an iPod mount, if you wish.

Mmmmm, so that means then I can’t get a Dension cradle or similar & just hook it up to the 12v power socket. I’ll need to try to integrate the gubbins inside a Belkin adaptor somehow.
I wonder what the cradle I have is for then. It was offered to me out of a car that was traded in to a friend of mine, who said the previous owner had an iPod. But when I was disconnecting it from the car, it was wired directly to the cars 12v at the back of the stereo.
Perhaps the new iPods can only handle a lesser voltage.

I think the Firewire capable iPods supported 12V in. (It's also possible the newer ones can handle a higher voltage... all I know is 5V is all you need on the current ones.)

Easy setup and it works perfectly for someone like me who has 2 left hands with no thumbs...

Well, you can find the accessories on the Apple Store Online...
Here are the links (I hope they work...) to the French version...
You can probably find the equivalent on the Apple Store for your country by looking under the brand name. You only have to add a wire to go to the AUX imput if you have an HSE (I think someone once posted here the link on how to do the modification for a base radio...) and "Voilà " !
I do have some trouble with using the direct link from the charger, but it works perfectly from the headphone output... Maybe it comes from my old generation iPod...
As I said, it is quick and dirty... But hey, I am not in the same league as some of our residents experts (Hats off to them...) !
