Is my Blown Turbo worth a DIY change? |
|
Right Disco friends... I need your collective help to save a few quid because I am tight!
I finally got the big thumbs down today from my local dealer who has confirmed my turbo needs replacing and has quoted 2000 quid (or thereabouts) to do the work.
In their defence they have been very helpful and not ripped me off diagnosing the problem (see my previous thread about lost power, bings and bongs).
This is all a bit annoying as I only came off extended warranty in August and I can't be bothered to pursue Landrover under the sale of goods act and argue the toss if the turbo is fit for purpose (might be worth a class action if anyone else is interested though )
However, I now need to decide what to do my options are -
1, get the dealer to do it and just stump up the cash
2, get a well known independant dealer to do it (they have quoted 1200)
3, Take it to my mates garage (who is not a Landrover man) stick it on his four poster for a few days and have a go ourselves
My questions in no particular order are this -
Has anyone on here ever done a DIY turbo change and would care to share some hints and tips?
Where is the best place to buy a new turbo?
Is it worth taking it off and sending it to a specilist for a recon?
Does anyone have a copy of the workshop manual?
Do you think I am mad?
Any thoughts are welcome, I might add some more questions as I think of them!
Thanks
Steve

Give these a shout. We've used them for truck turbos in the past and they've been good.

Thanks Jam@es, the 'well known independant' I mentioned in my original post who have quoted 1200 is Nene Overland - top company with a great workshop, I am just tight and thought I might save a few quid by trying it myself as I have access to a full workshop and a bit of time on my hands at the moment.
Good suggestion though - cheers

As I understand (from what they told me) unless you have the revised turbo mounting brackets, it's a bit of a nightmare to do! They took mine in expecting to have it done in 4 hours, it took them two days! They kept me informed though and I was happy with the customer service I received!
But if you have the time, go for it! 2014 D4 XS

Official LR procedure is to remove the body off the chassis. There is another way to do it but it is a pain too. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Hi, Thanks for all the advice, I knew I would find it here!
I am going to hit the phones and have a ring around to see what price I can get on a new turbo, I think we might take the old old off and send it for testing.
I understand from reading other posts that the same fault can appear when you have delaminating pipes, does anyone know anything about this?
This is what makes me think it might be worth getting the turbo tested as it has been suggested by a Landrover man that it might actually be OK and just need pipes.... but he said it is still a pain to do!
Any thoughts welcome

If you think it might be the intercooler pipe, then thats an easy change and very cheap. Maybe worth doing that first (as I'd suggest you change them at the same time anyway?).
Could save you all the hassle, but of course yoiur dealer has already diagnosed a faulty turbo, so maybe a wrong track, but worth pursueing.
Turbo Technics have a very very good reputation. A mate had an american Shelby that needed a reconditioned turbo that coulnd't be soiurced, so they re-con'd it at a very good price and it's been working greta guns since.
But may just be easier to buy one of Pete Bell's ones Bodsys Brake Bible

Hi,
Had the time to get my D3 on a ramp today and stripped of the intercooler pipes and took the heat shields away from the turbo for a look see.
The intercooler pipe had a medium amount of oil in it and the bottom of the intercooler had oil splattered all over the bottom.
The turbo has oil obviously blowing out from the connections.
I spoke to Pete at Bell autos and The Large One (thanks for all your help and advice guys - top notch)
Pete - I can hear the clicking sound you described when I turn the turbo off
Nick - i called back to check those party numbers and your side kick did it for me and advised they didnt match - thanks
the question I throw out now, is how much oil is to be expected in the intercooler pipes? I realise it is a difficult one for those that know without seeing it, but the vehicle is displaying no other faults other than throwing up the occassional fault code that tells us it is a turbo under/over boost.
Since I last had it reset (week and a half ago) I have driven it hard and the fault has not happened again.
There are no obvious holes in any of the pipes and the car seems to run OK, I need to drive to the Pyrenees at the end of February and could without a European break down!
What do people think... to change the turbo on the evidence gained or risk it?
Norrie - I might have to offer to deliver that TD5 to Scotland yet.... just so I can thrash the D3 on a long run
I have some photos of the oil on the pipes if anyone is interested enough to want to see what I am pondering over!
