How is Avg Fuel Consumption Calculated ?
I noticed today that fuel from my auxillary tank spills over into the main tank before I actually pump it over . How will this effect the fuel consumption calculation , because this means that the main tank appears to contain 115 l instead of 87 .

i seem to remember that most systems work out average mpg by taking a measurement of the vacuum in the inlet manifold (bmw's analogue needle is a good example). i assume that the d3 uses this figure along with average speed readings to get the mpg. i think the only difference to you will be in the range figure because as you say the car will think it has the 85l tank however this will change as you pump the fuel over.
i stand to be corrected when someone technical comes along Gone.......but not forgotten

The reason I'm asking is that the avg consumtion is very optimistic compared to the actual , and I thought this might be because of the extra fuel that flows into the tank

I would suspect that LR uses the amount of fuel injected (a known quantity) to calculate the fuel consumption. I doubt that it would use fuel level in the tank to calculate anything other than range. When refueling the range changes but the avg consumption does not.
