Intermittent steering vibration - front brakes binding ? |
|
My MY14 HSE started, a couple of months ago, at ~ 20k miles, to have intermittent steering vibration. Only happens occasionally.
I pinned it down to only happening after I've had the brakes on gently for several seconds (ie more than just a touch) and the cure is a sharp application of the brakes for several seconds whilst in motion.
My conclusion was that the front brakes are binding. I took it in to Team Valley LR this week for them to have a look. They say they found nothing and, although rear brakes binding (presumably the EPB) was quite common, they hadn't had cases of this before ...
Thoughts anyone ?
Anyone else had this ?

I had this occasionally with my D4, it got worst and felt as though the brakes where on slightly,
When it happens next time lift the brake pedal with your foot, the brake light switch is not working correctly when the pedal is feathered the ecu thinks the pedal is being pressed, holding the brakes for you
You may need a new switch mine did

Just seen this, and it exactly matches the problem I have lived with since the car was new! It does not happen often, and like you say a sharp application of the brakes cures it.
One thing I notice is when it is about to happen, the brakes loose there feel and the pedal goes quite hard and looses travel. They also become very sharp, and it becomes difficult to brake gently if you understand what I mean?
I have taken the car back to Guy Salmon in Stockport a few times and all they can come up with is to clean the brakes and pads.
I have myself removed the front calipers to inspect them, and they are full and free movement in all respects, so I am confident it is not the calipers.
I think it may be a pedal>master cylinder problem, but have not had chance to pursue that yet.
As the car gets older, it is happening less frequently. It will be more likely to do it on a long motorway run.

The brake peddle switch can be checked with the Iid tool under live values on any car in the working range, not just the vin the tool is allocated to. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Interesting you should suspect the bp switch! When the car was new, it had a really bad brake bind which cooked the brakes. LR replaced the brakes and discs without quibble, and they said that they also changed the switch. Maybe it's gone faulty again?

Success in my case (so far) |
|
Had this for a couple of months - had the wheels balanced (twice) and swapped fronts to rears - no luck
Last Friday I took the front calipers and pads out, then cleaned the slider pins to make sure it all moved ok. Calipers pistons moved in OK.
For the last couple of days this seems to have worked MY2010 D4 3.0 TDV6 HSE Stornaway grey

D4 discs seem to be warping for many. I think LR has a problem. I replaced mine with Delphi disks. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

LR use Brembo discs on the D4 3ltr.
Not to be confused with the full Brembo setup on the RRS.

Brembo OEMs are getting a bad reputation. So that would explain why they warp. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
